Cambodian language fluency competition held for foreigners

News by Xinhua

PHNOM PENH, (Xinhua) -- The first Khmer fluency competition kicked off here on Saturday with an aim of encouraging foreigners to the Cambodian language.

"The main idea behind this event is to promote the Khmer language and to show the Cambodian public that there are many foreigners who are learning Khmer and who are able to achieve high levels of speaking," said Sonia Cautain, founder of the Language Institute of Natural Khmer.

She said it was the first time such a competition was organized in Cambodia.

Some 22 participants, who came from nine countries - Japan, France, Belgium, South Korea, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), Australia, Italy, Britain and the United States - took part in the competition, which was classified into 3 different levels, including Intermediate, Advanced and Expert.
