NRC panel eyes setting up of environment court
THE NATION

BANGKOK: -- The National Reform Council's (NRC) natural resource and environment reform committee is planning to propose a bill for the setting up of an environment court within this month, committee representative Sayumphon Limthai said yesterday.

Sayumphon said the panel was in the process of submitting the draft to the NRC and then the National Legislative Assembly. If established, this new court would have three levels - primary, appeals and supreme - and handle the more than 1,000 environment-related cases currently stuck in the Administrative and Civil courts.

He made these comments after accepting a letter from Thirasak Cheukhunthod, chief of the Lawyers for Environment Association. In the letter, Thirasak expressed support for the setting up of a court that is independent and can speedily process the cases so that affected persons can be provided with remedial measures quickly.

They should make this court live like reality TV then walk outside. Oh hey wait there's tons of unprocessed waste everywhere and Issan has no so much waste they have no idea where to start. The bacteria in Jomtien/Pattaya is epic. Hope the court has its first case over the new coal plants being planned in Krabi... Yea right.

How many ' specialist ' courts does this country need ?

It may look good in the media for the usual ' something's being done ' pitch but will it achieve anything as Thai ' justice ' doesn't proceed with anything like a sense of urgency.

Incidentally, whatever happened to the tourist courts announced with so much fanfare ?

Does anyone know if they still operate or was this another great idea that disappeared without trace ?

At the rate that the NRC/NLA is adding more court systems, the Judicial branch will become larger than the Executive branch. Between Prayut, the NLA and NRC the size of the whole government will begin to exceed employment of major companies. But far more costly. With one-fourth of the Thai population being employed by the government, the next military coup will be easy.

Not another court.

This is not reform.

This is compounding the problem.

You have identified the problem: " ...the more than 1,000 environment-related cases currently stuck in the Administrative and Civil courts"

Now, find a way to fix that.

Try Root Cause Analysis.

[the sound you hear is falling on deaf ears]
