Report British Man Faces 21-Year Sentence for Pattaya Trafficking
A British man has reportedly been sentenced to 21 years and six months in prison after being found guilty of human trafficking at a well-known bar in Pattaya, according to Bangkok Criminal Court. William Bilton, originally from Barrow-in-Furness, was managing Flirt Bar, located in Soi 6 of Pattaya, when police conducted a raid two years ago, questioning dozens of women. The 33-year-old is currently on bail pending an appeal, facing allegations of exploiting a 16-year-old girl and promoting her services on the bar’s Facebook page. Surveillance footage allegedly captured him discussing her price with potential clients. In addition to Bilton, two Thai men involved in the operation received similar 21-year sentences, while a Thai woman was sentenced to three years and fined 30,000 baht (approximately £670) for running an unlicensed sex business. However, some insiders claim all the accused are currently out on bail. Local police chief Thanapong Phothi stated at the time of the raid: “We made the arrest to build confidence in Pattaya’s image among tourists.” Pattaya, often dubbed "Sin City," is a hub for the illegal yet flourishing sex industry in Thailand. Despite prostitution being illegal, it continues to thrive, contributing an estimated 233 billion baht (approximately £5.3 billion) annually, with around 200,000 sex workers nationwide. In response to the industry’s persistence, authorities are intensifying their crackdown on both vice and narcotics. This case highlights ongoing efforts to reshape Thailand's tourist hotspots and combat human trafficking. As these cases move through the legal system, they may set precedents for future enforcement and the broader fight against sex trafficking in the region. The outcome of Bilton’s appeal will be watched closely, as it may influence both local and international perceptions of the issue. Through continued vigilance and legal enforcement, authorities aim to improve Pattaya’s reputation among tourists while challenging the deeply entrenched sex trade. This case is a stark reminder of the challenges law enforcement faces in tackling human trafficking and organised crime. Adapted by ASEAN Now from The Thaiger 2025-07-04 -
