The OP is summing up his theory based on Gossip.... Seems to make friends and then talk about them behind their backs - then applying it in general.... won't work here or the US....of course if music venues are important to you and you speak english the US certainly would be appealing for a shallow gossipy life - until it catches up to him there too......

Maybe if he got out and about he might run into many of the veterans, UN employees, people that have worked for various church organizations, ex peace corp folks as well as youngish affluent families that wish to raise their families here and have all experienced Thailand and decided it was the best place to live for themselves.....Many as farang/foreign couples......These people have invested parts of their lives here and decided it was a better place - no reason knock the people - the place - or their decisions......

But - if you're gossiping it's never one way & the OP is going to be thrilled with music venues + be able to buy the National Enquirer, the Sun, and the Star too......

Enjoy the US - you're not needed here.....if you have the credentials try teaching American kids - it will be quite the educational for YOU.....

Enjoy......

If taking a Thai wife there - good luck to you facing the competition......

Different people come t Thailand for different reasons and find them selves in different venues, Thus exposed to different

to people with different motivations. Like any other part of the world, not all people are the same.

I was lucky to meet my wife at a professional venue, and got exposed to a different Thailand than some of the people who meet their wives in a tourist area. Not to say that all of the girls that work in the tourist industry are bad, not even to say that most,

many of them are very good girls, but at the same time there are many that are not. the same is true for the farangs who frequent there.

To use an extreme example , if you frequent whorehouses, dont be surprised if all you meet are whores

When I am in Thailand, and I go there every year and spend a couple of months, I never spend time with an other Farang, not because I avoid them, but because there is no need or opportunity.

I am there with my wife, we spend time with her family and friends, they are all very nice people, I some times meet other farangs while shopping, we say hello. ask where we are from chat for a min and good buy.

I think you find Laos more attractive because it is not as developed as Thailand. The "disneworld" atmosphere has not developed yet and the people are more genuine. But if you get away from the Thai tourist areas I think you can find the same in Thailand

Anyway, the US could be good for you and your wife, plenty of opportunity for both of you there, but dont write off Thailand as of yet, You are young, plenty of time ahead of you to explore all the other Thailands you might not be aware of yet.

And remember as you get older your tastes change, and things you once thought of very important. no longer are.

Good Luck

Excellent well-balanced post from someone who obviously knows what he's talking about.

Back in 2007 i met a few American college grads teaching English to Thai children, they where sent to Thailand via the peace corps apparently this looked good on a cv back in the USA they told me.

Chagging cheap hookers and drinking was the main event for these guys on their quest to teach.........

I pitty Thailand and its children who are exposed with the dregs of farang society and its bunch of social misfits pretending to be something they are not.......

Guess I've been lucky in meeting a different sort ..... Mostly 10-20+ years living here.....

Not the poke and toke sort....guess it depends on the type of company we keep....Peace Corps did have a unique path some people took to sign on.....

I find it very strange that Thailand according to a report published by the UN a few years ago has a literacy rate of 96% on its total populace.Countrys in a far more worse situation then Thailand have les NGO'S or foreign volunteers working in their respective country's and of course in Thailand or South-East Asia most are men,how strange....

Most of said NGO'S working in said part of the world have been exposed by investigative journalists as nothing else but a bunch of shysters who do nothing else but support their lavish lifestyle with the money of their naieve supporters from the West.

Reminds me of the old Aesop fable regarding the grapes that were a tad to high to reach.....In this case , for the op....Thailand is the grape.....Its one thing to retire here with a pension and or a load of cash....and another thing to come here and work , make a living , buy a house and start a family and then retire.......You cant compare Thailand with the West, If you have lived here and left with your tail between your legs....Why make a point in calling attention to yourself?

We seem not to care you are glad you left.

Re: NGO's I remember a story a few years back on CNN from Afghanistan:

CNN Reporter talking to a young Afghan boy: What do you want to be when you grow up?

Boy: I want to be an NGO worker.

CNN: Do you know what an NGO worker is?

Boy: Yes -- he's someone who drives a Land Rover.

OP, simply put: not everyone has the same interests in life.

I'm divorced.

I never should have married in the first place, but that's the kind of thing you get clever about afterwards.

You are still in the "in love with wife, settle down get house and children" phase.

If you are lucky, this phase will never end.

Of course, a Western country has much more to offer than Thailand to people who are not wealthy and want to live a normal life (married, children, job...).

I never said I was wealthy, ...just pointing that out. So while your goal here might have been to to point out an example of my hypocrisy or whatever, no where did I ever say I was wealthy..

What people don't actually realize is that Newport is one of the poorer communities in RI

I can't speak the the rest of the world, but it seems much easier to laid in the U.S. than in Thailand.

I would change that to 'it is much easier to get laid in Thailand to a beautiful woman than in the US'.

That is even if you keep prostitution out of it.

No shortage of beautiful women in the U. S.

No, but not as many as in Thailand. Oriental girls will beat Western girls for looks anytime.

Funny that the OP would harp on the lovers of Thailand and yet, neglect to mention the haters of Thailand who are much more likely to be disenfranchised individuals with a trail of failed relationships, and in deep financial straits. My experience with people who have nothing but contempt for Thailand is that they consistently fit the profile of a bitter and beaten man. But we'll give him a pass as he's leaving the LOS for greener pastures.

Let's be honest OP, a 28 year old English teacher is not going to be someone with a bright financial future in Thailand. I've said many times that Thailand is not the place for a young man to come if you're seeking financial riches (or even just financial security). It's a great place to come if you're retired and have your financial ducks in a roll. In fact, the visa laws in place pretty much encourages that. Your negative experiences are yours and yours alone, not the same as a great many of us. I've lived in both the USA and Thailand for many years. Both have pluses and minuses. It's up to each to determine what's best for them. You chose your path. Why would you feel the need criticize others who have chosen a different path?

I came over to work on some legal matters for a while and enjoyed my time there and met my wife but it never occurred to me for a minute to live there after my work was completed. Quite happy in the U.S. And for those of us who actually have careers and financial resources why in the world would we leave to live in a third world country where we are not particularly wanted? Every time I travel outside the U.S., I enjoy the experience usually but am always glad to get home.

Because you wanted a wife, and nobody in your home country wanted you.

Coming here then taking one home is for the extremely rich (can live anywhere in style) or the very poor (have to work).

I'm thinking you are in the 'have to work' category.

Mind you, if they divorce you in the USA, that can become a bit of a poverty nightmare for the man.

I can tell by the comments of some on here...who has actually been to the United States and those who are simply bashing it based on rhetoric and talking points..Using preconceived notions to sway the way they think, while having no personal experience with anything American except the occasional person they have met....

Hey! I at least try and live a place for a year before making any sort of judgement/observation...

For those who haven't been....the country is huge and any attempt at sticking it on a label shelf is futile....

I am 28 years old and just returned to the United States to live (at least 6 months) after spending the better half of five years in Thailand and Laos...What I am going talk about is MUCH more prevalent amongst expats in Thailand than in Laos.

I will get to meet a an individual who espouses great love for Thailand and how life and things are so much better over here than they are back home, I will get to know them and will find out later (usually through a 3rd party) they are either divorced, in tax exile, broke or a big alcoholic....they will talk about how life in the west sucks compared to Thailand and how everything just everything is better over there and if you point out a few things that you think might be better back home (USA, Canada, Europe, Australia you know "Falangland") they immediately accuse you of bashing Thailand and Thai People.....what are other peoples experience with people who exude an overzealous enthusiasm for Thailand?seems like a lot of the time they are hiding something.....it's like they have to love love love everything Thai to cover up how things didn't go so well back home...I'm not judging except that some of these guys can be nasty and cold (lots of them just don't like to like Americans either for stubborn reasons, yea yea, I know it aint perfect in USA either)

After being back in the western world, I don't know if I really want to go back to Thailand and live, I first thought it was a much better life...

I taught English for a few years it was fun but eventually realized that as a young guy, there is so much going on for me here (Its not even a woman issue at all, ok Thailand takes the cake with that one, but I'm married to a Thai girl so it was easy to get her over here). Good music scene, A LOT more education amongst people my age vs as back in Thailand...(I'm not judging I know the education system being crappy is not their fault).. Politcally, I'm not sure a place like Thailand is really much better than the USA I mean with Great Leader and all and the impending you know what.....

that being said, If I come back to Southeast Asia to live, I'm sticking to Laos...

I'm not judging but..

I'm not judging but...

Sounds like someone who spent too much time reading tv posts taking things a bit too serious. Sure theres not a lot going on over here after the honeymoon phase and all the romance is gone and youve beccome immune to the suduction of the tropical paradise. Theres not much in the way of careers dreams and aspirations when youre on a teachers wage. It would have worked for someone with a laid back attitude to life. Theres first world benefits to being in farangland you are probally better off. Id almost bet money that you will miss it and when youve got more money youll probably come back to retire.

You just keep digging yourself into a hole, don't you? You criticize others for being judgmental about America when you yourself are being much more judgmental of Thailand. And this after spending only a few years in Thailand being around mostly a bunch of broke and drunk expats (your words). Can't you at least admit the hypocrisy?

By the way, I know America very well, having lived there most of my life. I hope you're bringing more on your resume than just a few years of teaching English.
