Pro-Democracy Activists File Assault Charges Against Officers

The seven pro-democracy activists who filed a complaint against security officers after a seven hour stand-off outside Pathumwan Police Station in Bangkok, 24 June 2015.

BANGKOK — Seven pro-democracy activists successfully filed complaints against three security officers who allegedly abused them during a protest last month, following a stand-off with police officers that lasted for nearly seven hours yesterday.

The seven activists are among those charged with violating the junta's ban on protests by staging an anti-coup "sit-in" in Bangkok on 22 May - the first anniversary of the 2014 coup d'etat. Police and army officers forcefully broke up the peaceful demonstration by dragging each activist away from the scene.

The seven activists, most of whom are university students, arrived at Pathumwan Police Station at around 1 pm yesterday to file complaints against two army and one police officers who allegedly kicked, punched, and taunted them during the crackdown.

Police initially prevented the group from entering the police station, leading to a seven-hour standoff, until Col. Burin Thongprapai, an officer from the martial court, arrived at the scene and negotiated with the activists. Acting on Col. Burin's command, police finally permitted the activists’ legal representatives to file the complaint on their behalf at around 8 pm.

The history of anti-democrats demonizing their opposites.....comparing them to Genghis khan, over-the-top criminality and anything else they can think of to malign them with venom beyond the pale....Is seen by many as a demonization program demonstrating weakness.

In this case, the mere mention of Mr. Jatuporn elicits such commentary.

I suppose one could retaliate by maligning the Suthep's, Abhisits, Chuan Leekpai, etc. in a similar fashion.

But as much as one is on the other side, it seems to me their leadership ought to receive some respect...Challenges over their politics for sure, but at least be considered human beings.

In this case. I have no problem quoting Mr. Jatuporn, Nathawut, Dr. Weng. Thaksin. Yingluck, Thida, leadership of the PTP, etc., and speaking respectfully about them, I hold them in high regard,.....No amount of anti-democrat rhetoric and will change that....Least of all an orchestrated demonization campaign waged against those that anti-democrats consider their most formidable opponents. As mentioned above, that emanates from a position of electoral weakness.

Mr. Jatuporn spoke in support of these students, as he shares their Democracy ideals, as I do.

Your kidding right? They were there trying to file a compliant that soldiers and police punched kick and bashed them,

And in your own words "Unarmed and without hostages"

All well within their legal right to do, but they were prevented until it when via media and shamed the powers that be to do their job...........

So if it was your kid on the receiving end of FIST'S and BOOT'S you would still have this [sic] attitude? calling for the laws and justice to be done? I think Not!!!

Come on! You tv member are only viewing this one-sided.

You have a group of students who were arrested for violating a law. They knew in advance it was a violation. Then, they decided to repeat that violation by going together to the police to demand to make report against the police who arrested them in the first place. By assembling together they violated yet another law.

2 wrongs do not make it right.

Even if they were justified to make a report they had other options about how to do that without going as a group and violating that law again. They chose to do it this way for a reason. Just as they chose to refuse to disperse the first time they gathered together which led to their arrest.

Now i dont believe in coincidences so i have to think this is all being done to make a show.

The point is that even if they are justified to make a report against the police, they went about it the wrong way and violated a law in doing so.

I do not have to like or agree with a law in thailand but i have to adhere to them. So do these students. So i stand by what i said.

Excuse me sir, those students were not arrested, they were ordered to report to the police station.

Instead they decided to file complaints on that occasion, and were blocked off by over 100 policemen, For 7 students?

Mr. Jatuporn spoke in support of these students, as he shares their Democracy ideals, as I do.

Eloquently put. I have a slightly different view on that and, since we all hold democracy in lofty esteem, I'm sure noone will disagree with my right to air it.

It is indeed true that part of the fascist ethos is demonizing their opposites. But I'd have to add that Jatuporn is certainly also guilty of that, and he always supported the idea of setting up Red Shirt villages and the like so; his Democracy ideals are "questionable". In fact, I am quite sure he holds fascist beliefs. Believe me, it takes one to know one.

Despite the fact that Fascism is directly opposed to Democracy, "Democracy" is usually the fundamental aim of Fascism (in speech marks because it was democratic by name not nature, much like Giovanni Gentile's stance of fascism - "authoritarian Democracy"). Personally I have noticed Democracy in Thailand becoming more autocratic each year since I've been here, and I got here in 2001. It was OK back then, but it's never been a "healthy Democracy". Democracy stands on the pillars of Law and Education. Thailand has never been strong in either, which is why we have come to this point in Thailand's political history (again).

These kids are standing up for their right to free speech... where the right to free speech is limited by Law. You break the Law, you must expect to face the consequences. Sure, they shouldn't have been kicked or whatever, and the cops shouldn't have tried to stop them... but Thai cops unfortunately tend to be pricks, especially when someone questions their integrity. The question I have is why they weren't rounded up again along with the group that joined them in numbers with a loudspeaker truck for "moral support". But I suppose the police decided it's better to let the army arbitrarily detain some of these violence-seeking rabble rousers (sorry, my opinion) in their homes over the next few days under Article 44 rather than facing them all at once and having the risk of a "third hand" shoot an M79 somewhere. Who knows, maybe it was a good decision.

Prayuth took responsibility for breaking the Law by installing his Junta and postponing his own retirement to personally take charge of a mega Spring Clean. OK, he's totally messing up diplomatically all the time and I'm sure he doesn't know that much about economic policies, but these things are of minor significance in the long term when compared shaking up a downward "democratic" spiral and trying to establish a sustainable system of stability, peace and prosperity. So, yes, I like Prayuth, he's cool. Some might call him mad, egotistical, paranoid, whatever else, and I would neither agree nor disagree with them, but I think he's at least a patriot and I think he did the right thing.

"to demand to make report against the police who arrested them in the first place."

Did they demand or just want to go through a legal procedure of complaint.

All over the world people push against the government and the powers that be, in our western countries we have opposition parties in parliament, we have free press, letters to the editor, public meetings and rallies in the street.

Those in power must never be allowed to take their power for granted.

Can't dispute your comments about breaking the law. Would just like to ask whether you agree with the law on assembly? The law is unjust, and, I believe, should be ignored. The more that ignore it the better. As much as I despise the man, Jatuporn was right in this instance. For the most part it is only the young that will have the balls to stand up, and in the long term they are going to be the most affected by the way this country is heading. The older generation are either too scared or too indoctrinated in the "Thai way" of doing things (not doing anything), to address the real issues this country is facing.

If you break the law, you can expect to be arrested. If you don't like the laws then you have to vote for a party who will change the laws to how you like and hope they win the election, and then do as they promised.

That's not working here at the moment - elections on hold, until .........................

If you are arrested you do not expect to be assaulted by the enforcement officers. That is not acceptable and the students or anyone must have the right to file charges.

However, what do you expect the thorough, professional and highly competent RTP investigation into the alleged assaults will reveal?

A law needs to be justifiable. If not it needs to be struck from the books. This particular law was introduced to take away civil rights from the masses.

I never said I was siding with Jatuporn, like you I believe he is a self serving blowhard. However, I do agree with his comment in this instance. I do not care who utters the truth, even people I despise. The truth is the truth. You cannot cherry pick.

I agree that generally we should all follow the law. There are several laws I do not like for selfish reasons but would never break those laws. In this case, however, the law is clearly wrong and should not be respected.
