.

I recently visited both. Stayed in a really nice new place in Si Satchanalai called Tonpalm Resort 089-960-5956, 089-461-8323. 400/ 500 bt with AC, hot water, satellite tv ( Thai only ) and fridge.

I did each on different days, but would have been happy to do both in a day.

Not sure now, but think I took the 1113 ( whatever it's number it starts directly from Sukhothai Historical Park and goes west of the river ) from Sukhothai back to Si Satchanalai- good road with little traffic. Wouldn't recommend going south on it though as very confusing getting onto it from Si Satchanalai.

The Si Satchanalai Historical Park is some distance from the town, and best reached on the main Rd south, turning over the river. Don't get confused by the sign half way down Main St saying turn left to the Si Satchanalai National Park.

I am heading up north an plan to stop in Sukhothai on the way back. Is there not much there to only warrant 1/2 a day?

Assuming you mean the historical park, unless you really enjoy ruins 1/2 a day would do it. You can pay 50 baht to take your car in, or rent a bicycle, and drive around. The whole park can be driven around in about 15 minutes, then you can go back to whichever ruins you like and take photos. There is a large food park near the ticket office, INSIDE the park, to have a meal at.

I suggest you take an umbrella if not in a car. A sudden downpour caught a lot of people when I was there.

I was surprised at how small the park actually is. I had expected a much larger place. I only stayed about 3 hours.

Don't regret making a special trip to see it though.

Have a nice visit.
