Non-imm business visa vs tourist visa

Featured Replies

Hi all, I have spent a lot of time reading the threads in the visas forum and need some advice.

Here's the situation: I am starting an online business with a friend of mine. We've been in Cambodia the past 6 months, but now it looks like our production is going to be done in Thailand. Thus, I'm considering moving to Bangkok (with boyfriend in tow) so I can oversee production. I'm American, he's Australian, we're in our early 30s.

We would be there for potentially the next 6 months to a year, until the business gets off the ground. I've been reading the various requirements for getting a business visa and it seems like every consulate is a little bit different. All the variation in required documents is stressing me out a bit, so I'm considering just getting double entry tourist visas instead. However what worries me is what we do after the six months that the tourist visa covers, if we need to stay longer in Thailand. Generally speaking, will we be allowed a few 30-day visa exempt visa runs before they shut us down?

Our Cambodian visas expire towards the end of August and I would prefer not to pay to extend them, so at this point we have some options:

1. Enter Thailand on visa exempt stamps, then try to get non-immigration B visas in Thailand. (Although this would require asking our Thai business associate to fib a letter for my boyfriend, since he's not involved in our business, and I'm not sure I want to put our Thai supplier in that position.)

2. Go to the US in August, see family and attend a friend's wedding while getting our visas: either a non-B for me and a tourist for boyfriend, or tourist for us both.

3. Try to get double entry tourist visas from the Thai embassy in Phnom Penh - but I've read that they're strict and it's difficult?

4. Go to Laos in August and get our double entry tourist visas there.

I'd love to hear from anyone who has any experience or advice regarding any of the options (or has additional options to offer). Thanks so much!

It will not be possible to get a visa here in the country unless you have a work permit application done and all the company documents required.

You will not be able to get a non-b visa at any nearby location without work permit application approval letter.

You will only be able to get a single entry tourist visa In PP.

It would probably be easier to enter the country on visa exempt entries and then get 30 day extensions of them at immigration,

If you are going to the states you might be able to get a multiple entry non-b visas from one on the hooray consulates with supporting documents from your Thai partner. If not then a 2 entry visa would be best.

You can get a 2 entry tourist visa in Laos.

Oh, ok. So getting the business visa after entering Thailand is a no-go. As is PP. Well, at least now I've narrowed down our options. Thank you!
