Does anyone know if there is a problem bringing on overweight hand luggage on Air Asia flights provided it is within the size limits and you have paid to have it checked anyway?

Another words you have paid for your weight allowance but just want to carry it on board rather then check it in.

Many thanks.

Having recently flown Air Asia a couple of times I note that they don't check the size or weight of hand luggage despite all the notices on the web site.

In fact, one Chinese girl was toppled over by the weight of the hand luggage as she tried to lift it in the overhead bins causing a serious injury to the man below!!!!!

I personally think they should stick very strictly to the rules of one piece of hand luggage, it's specified size and weight. You see so many people trying to carry 3 or 4 bags, clearly over weight, taking ages to load the plane, sit down and delaying the flight for everyone. The over head bins are designed for a weight and are clearly being overloaded; wonder what happens in an "incident" when that weight becomes too much??

Well it was not so long ago that as long as your hand baggage was with certain pre stipulated dimensions that most airlines let you take it on board what ever the weight. Now they realise they are losing money on hold luggage most have pulled the plug on that one although some like Easyjet still allow one piece of hand luggage what ever the weight provided it fits the dimensions.

I do agree about the one piece of luggage rule however since it is space that they are taking that should be allocated to other passengers. Having said that airlines let people take on board as much duty free as they can carry on so that also

contributes to the space problem.

For the first time ever my wife and I had our carry on luggage weighed (2 x regulation sized cabin cases) at Suvarnabhumi recently on our return to UK with Eva Air. The limit was the usual 7kg each and was easily under. Though, I'm guessing the lad was a junior / trainee as he had someone looking over his shoulder the whole time.

I would prefer the airlines were more strict and consistent about weighing carry on as some people seem to think they can occupy an entire overhead bin all to themselves. It does get a bit ridiculous on occasion. If you want extra space and weight then you should pay for it.

Still, if the airlines are so lax about it then people will take advantage.

On an AA Kix - KUL flight, i saw people checking in in groups. One person would check in with a small bag (while his friends waited around the corner), then his friends, one at a time. When they had all checked in they cleared Immigration and later boarded the plane - each was carrying four or five bags.

Why pay for check in when Air Asia make it so easy? The rules might have changed since then - but it's worth trying.

Wow, things have sure changed at Air Asia then. I have flown them many times, and they always check the weight of the carry-ons. In fact, two months ago, the couple in front of me had 2 carry-ons. One was 3 kilos over, one was 3 kilos under. They made them step aside, repack their pack their bags, and made sure both were at their limit and no more. It did not change the total weight by one ounce, but they made them do it.

We did not get weight checked on last Air Asia flight. Seize was way under, but it they had checked for weight.....different story because of camera, laptop etc.

I flew AirAsia in April and my carry-on bag was not weighed. If you check-in online, print your own boarding pass, and don't go to the check-in counter you will significantly reduce your chances of having your bag weighed. thumbsup.gif

What about weighing the passenger AND luggage? I got charged 89 UKP as I was over the limit. I weigh 75 kilos. The guy in front was a monster and looked well over a hundred kilos. He paid nothing extra and took up half my seat as well as his own on the plane.

The security staff at KUL usually check hand baggage weights as you enter the lounge areas.

Size and weight DO matter and they turn away anyone with more than 7kg.

Wasn't my experience. Went through KUL twice in April, didn't even see a scale.

whenever I used EVA since 2007, they did weigh the hand luggage. At Taipei as well as at their other Asian destinations

this never happened to me at KLIA main terminal in more than 5 years and 50 flights leaving KLIA both domestic and international.

the old LCCT is another story, but recently I have not seen that at the new KLIA2 - used it just last week ago

True enough: I always have a small back-pack with my lap top in it. It also has a supply of snacks etc, which I have carried ever since they (AirAsia) sold all their meals including the one I had ordered.

The first and only time I had nothing to eat before boarding for an 8-hour flight.sad.png

That could potentially be serious, for someone who was diabetic, and needed to eat regularly. blink.png
