BANGKOK: -- AUTOPSY results show that construction tycoon Chuwong Saetang was still alive when the Lexus car in which he was a passenger crashed into a tree on June 26, the Crime Suppression Division acting chief said yesterday.

Colonel Akaradej Pimonsri revealed this information as suspicion grew that Chuwong might have been killed and his body put into the car to make it look like an accident. The man driving the car was former deputy commerce minister Pol Lt-Colonel Banyin Tangpakorn, who was giving Chuwong a ride home when the crash took place. Banyin survived without a scratch.

Chuwong's family has raised doubts about the tycoon's death after realising that a huge volume of his shares had been transferred to two women not many days before the crash. They have also suggested that the signatures on the transfer documents had been forged. "We have now frozen the shares," Akaradej said.

The Central Investigation Bureau (CIB), meanwhile, said it should be able to shed light very soon on the cases involving Chuwong's death and the transfer of shares.

CIB commissioner Pol Lt-General Thitiraj Nhongharnpitak said yesterday that all doubts in this case should be cleared in two weeks.

"The share transfer and his death may or may not be related. We will solve the two cases based on available evidence," he said, adding that the two women should report to police quickly for their own safety. Even though Chuwong's death and the questionable share transfer have become big news, the two women have yet to respond to police summonses.

A source said one of the women was good-looking and had been intimate with Chuwong. "She's pregnant and Chuwong obviously wanted to take responsibility," the source said, adding that the woman was expected to report to police tomorrow.

Meanwhile, Udomsuk Police Station superintendent Colonel Nitis Boonjarern said his team was in the process of checking with a Toyota service centre as to why the airbags in the Lexus had not functioned during the accident.

"So far, Toyota staff have told us that normally airbags should have worked if the accident happened while the vehicle was moving at a speed of over 60km per hour. But they have to examine the vehicle closely before coming to a conclusion," Nitis said.

Just take your time,no hurry,instead of bringing witnesses in for questioning

just tell them to report in at earliest opportunity ! this seems to be the same

scenario as when the jewelery dealers (Saudi gems) wife and son were suppose

to have been killed in a car crash,the car was hardly damaged,and it was proven

that they were dead before been put in the car.

The damaged car was show on Channel 3 this morning. No way somebody will die in that crash. The car was probably riding less than 20 KM/HR...and was a Lexus SUV.....Even crashing at 60...that car is very strong and safe. Very fishy event....

But the police are already posturing their story, which seems to support their ex senior colleague, former politician and ex government minister.

Now seems he was still alive, according to the police, at the time of the accident. And they are inferring the good looking woman may have received shares as a "reward" and security for becoming pregnant by the deceased.

The lack of damage to the car, the amazing escape without a single scratch, bruise, whiplash or anything of the driver, the shares transferred to a second older lady broker's mum for apparently no reason, the possibility of forged signatures, will all be simply glossed over.

I predict the RTP will announce that it was a tragic accident in which the deceased sadly lost his life and the driver miraculously escaped. The other vehicle and driver which caused him to swerve will never be traced. The share transfer to the caddie/pretty will be to provide security for her and her baby, inference being the deceased was the father. The share transfer to the broker's mum will be claimed as payments owed for some brokerage work or similar. There won't be any evidence of forgery, just a few opinions, nothing that can be proven. Case closed.

The time delay, allowing summoned witnesses to wander in at their leisure is convenient so stories can be aligned and of course suitable financing for all this hard work enabled.

Once the police get involved, and there's serious money about. any chance of real justice is lost.

I wonder what the police are going to come up with next the rescuers stated the driver was unconscious but the passenger was dead ? there were no injuries to the driver ? I dont believe this I think the driver is guilty. the whole case smells very very fishy .

Maybe the question asked was why was the airbag not fixed after the Toyota recall in other countries

They have the witnesses and victims already with them,

Just a matter of days !! not 2 weeks !!

Also fishy, if not completely bogus, is what the article said was Toyota's response as to why the air bags did not deploy.

Airbag deployment is not solely a function of vehicle velocity. Crash G-forces, of course, figure into the airbag deployment decision by the Airbag Control Unit. It has become quite complex, according to this rather extensive Wiki Entry on Vehicle Air Bags:

"Airbags are designed to deploy in frontal and near-frontal collisions more severe than a threshold defined by the regulations governing vehicle construction in whatever particular market the vehicle is intended for: United States regulations require deployment in crashes at least equivalent in deceleration to a 23 km/h (14 mph) barrier collision, or similarly, striking a parked car of similar size across the full front of each vehicle at about twice the speed. International regulations are performance based, rather than technology-based, so airbag deployment threshold is a function of overall vehicle design."

The simplistic value of 7-Gs to trigger deployment cropped up more than once from various sites in a Google search.
