Vietnam to offer biggest-ever amnesty for up to 17,000 prisoners, including foreigners



VIETNAM: -- Tuoi Tre News reported that clemency will be given to up to 17,000 prisoners, including foreigners, nationwide by August 30 under an amnesty decision by State President Truong Tan Sang, making it the biggest ever.

This amnesty is to mark the 70th anniversary of National Day, Sept 2, said said Deputy Minister of Public Security Le Quy Vuong.

Prisoners considered for the amnesty include those with jail terms and those with life sentences commuted to jail terms, Deputy Minister Vuong said.

He said 5,000-17,000 prisoners are expected to be set free in this amnesty.

“We will implement the amnesty as soon as possible, possibly before August 30, so that the released prisoners can celebrate National Day,” news website VnExpress quoted the deputy minister as saying.

This amnesty includes the largest-ever number of prisoners released, the Vietnam News Agency cited head of the General Department for Enforcement of Criminal Sentences and Judicial Assistance Nguyen Ngoc Bang as saying on Monday.

Along with local prisoners, foreign inmates who have displayed good behavior and rehabilitation will also be set free.

In what universe would Vietnam ever try to keep until now prisoners from the Vietnam war (or what the Vietnamese call the American war)? What would incarceration of those people benefit the Vietnamese government? Lets just take it that all MIAs are either dead (most likely) or changed their name and disappeared in some third country. MIA specialists from the USA (some of whom can speak Vietnamese) have worked the country chasing down every connection and repatriating remains. I know this because I met some of them. The idea that there would be some "secret" camp somewhere with American and other Westerners languishing is just ludicrous.

Years back, I read a book by a former Secretary of the Navy/Marine, James Webb.

I believe it was called "Lost Soldiers", and was (back then) probably a pretty good portrayal of how things went with MIA's and how the Vietnam government treated their remains...etc.

I do hope it has all changed...since then.
