I advise many farangs with Thai girlfriends to set them up in some business, make them self sufficient, and if possible out of bangkok, i.e. away from too many temptations to stray ! BUT, you need to be very careful, by and large rents/business's etc. will be in the Thai name, if a boyfriend/Husband suddenly appears, you have nothing to stand on - also to do anything, work thru a solicitor, get the right paperwork, a good example, many foreigners invested in small business's/bars etc. in the soi 10 complex, now a pile of rubble, and no compensation paid - likewise clinton Plaza, the sad fact is if you get into something successful, more often than not, someone in a postition of power, will want to move in, and not alot you can do about it. Probably best to have a reliable Thai partner, also the company www.sunbelt asia.com has sound business's quoted for sale, but tread carefully in any business deal - have to also add, these days i dont check/investigate any local business's, - just too dangerous, too corrupt, and I'm getting past spending time in Thai jails !

I suppose my own business is close to the perfect Thai business. I operate text-messaging services on the European mobile networks.  I'm in the process of relocating my operating offices to Thailand. The intention is that I can take advantage of the (general), lower operating costs in Thailand for office, staff etc, whilst maintaining the high revenue that can be generated by a business servicing affluent Europeans in Europe.

I can operate like this thanks to the wonders of the internet, which enable 'virtual' offices and businesses to operate almost anywhere in the world.

But running a 'bricks and mortar' business in Thailand, such as a bar, seems to me to be much more prone to problems.  After all, are you really offering something that cannot be offered by a local Thai? If they can do the same as you then there is always a risk that they WILL do the same as you, and suddenly your dream business is a millstone around your neck!

Running your own business is always a risk, and I urge anyone who is considering setting-up in Thailand to look further than the typical bar. (I read the report about the fly-fishing business in Chiang Mai - brilliant idea!!)

Best of luck to anyone making the move to LOS!

Why move to thailand ? Just because low cost of opration ?

Read carefully ...thais will make your business more expensive to oprate and in the end you will not make much money. My advise is to move to a different country such as Vietnam .
