US content with Thailand’s indictment of human trade suspects

BANGKOK, 24 July 2015 (NNT) – The United States is supportive of Thailand’s decision to indict a group of individuals alleged of involvement in human trafficking while encouraging the Kingdom to push on with its fight against the problem.

On behalf of the US, Spokeswoman of the US Embassy in Thailand Melissa Sweeney voiced satisfaction over the Thai attorney-general’s decision to prosecute senior army officer Lt Gen Manas Kongpan and 71 accomplices for their alleged roles in the trafficking of Rohingya people.

The spokeswoman said, to solve the human trafficking problem in a sustainable manner, long-term commitment and determination would be required. Therefore, the US would like to see Thailand continue to maintain stringent law enforcement and bring all culprits to justice regardless of who they are.

According to Ms Sweeney, any anti-human trafficking operations conducted after April 1 this year will be taken into consideration by the US Department of State when preparing its Trafficking in Persons Report for next year.

"According to Ms Sweeney, any anti-human trafficking operations conducted after April 1 this year will be taken into consideration by the US Department of State when preparing its Trafficking in Persons Report for next year."

Translation: When the 2015 TIP report is released, Thailand will remain Tier 3. Yup.

"Satisfied" means something different in Thai than it does in English, apparently. "Encouraged" might be appropriate.

I'm happy that many fishing boats are docked and even being sold, and that some slave camps have been destroyed. I hope it's a real sign of progress.

Let's not forget that the EU has been making the most noise about buying product while threatening a ban, and good for them. Keep the heat on. LINK

Cheers

They should get their own house in order

That was a good report by the Urban Institute in 2007.

You should update your sources.

That lead graphic, for example, showing the trafficking laws in the US by State, is updated each year by the Polaris Project. For 2014, the equivalent graphic is here http://www.polarisproject.org/what-we-do/policy-advocacy/national-policy/state-ratings-on-human-trafficking-laws

I think what this more recent information shows is that the US is getting its house in order. I am sure more needs to be done. The Urban Institute in 2014 published a new report that made a set of recommendations.

The Tiered ranking produced by the US State Department is based not only on the magnitude of the problem in each country, but also by the extent of meaningful efforts to curb trafficking. Thailand has fallen short, and the recent crackdown on camps in southern Thailand is evidence the current Thai government wants to show they are taking meaningful action. The key question is: is this just a short term effort, or a long term commitment?

HUMAN TRAFFICKING
US lauds govt for indicting traffickers
The Nation

BANGKOK: -- The US yesterday welcomed reports that Thai authorities have indicted 72 suspects accused of involvement in human trafficking.

Melissa Sweeney, spokesperson for the US Embassy in Bangkok, said that the United States encouraged every country to vigorously investigate possible human trafficking cases irrespective of whether they are committed by individuals or organised networks.

"Successfully combating human trafficking requires sustained, long-term effort. We continue to encourage Thailand to take robust action to address human trafficking, including successfully prosecuting those arrested and indicted for trafficking crimes," she said, adding that the last Trafficking in Persons report covered cases from April 1, 2014, to March 31 this year.

"Developments that take place after March 31 [2015] will be covered in next year's report," she explained. Thailand was downgraded from Tier 2 to the lowest Tier 3 in June last year due to its lack of progress in combating human trafficking.

The latest report will be released on Monday.

Sweeney's entire comments about "voicing satisfaction" are not in quotes. Therefore, it is an illustration of questionable Thai journalism an certainly questionable about the true sentiments of the US on supposed Thai human trafficking arrests.

Translation: You haven't done enough.

Now how about the US cleaning up it's own sex trade and human trafficking problems that was described recently by an expert in trafficking as being rampant and out of control.

Chicago FBI agents and representatives of organizations that try to assist the victims delivered a chilling message Thursday night that sex slavery is rampant in Chicago and its surrounding suburbs. About 25,000 women and underage girls are trafficked in, around and through local neighborhoods each year, the experts said.

This is JUST Chlcago!!! - I doubt that the number of Rohinga refugees comes any where near this number.
