The latest book by John Burgess, “Temple in the Clouds”, is a pleasant journey for avid readers about Southeast Asia and its mystic temple, Preah Vihear - historically, spiritually, geologically, politically and intellectually. The writing style is fair and objective, presenting differing opinions in a seamless flow of information.

Just like the construction of Preah Vihear itself, Burgess lays a solid foundation and then proceeds to build an equally solid structure for understanding this superb site and its modern-day significance.

Interspersed among the pages are helpful illustrations and insightful photographs. He also has the ability to produce eloquent imagery. For example: “The summit is like the prow of a great vessel that is sailing south tipping upward as it takes waves head-on.”

When I first came here, it was all pretty predictable. Nights out, bars, always somewhere busy. That was the routine. These days it’s different. Quieter, less going out. How about you sharing your diplomatic brilliance with Kuwait, Bahrain, Iraq, UAE, KSA and Oman who are all being extorted by Iran.
