Plan to blacklist over 1,000 companies

BANGKOK: -- The National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) plans to gradually blacklist over 1,000 private companies which have won government contracts and failed to properly file the projects' financial information.

The companies which won contracts valued Bt2 million and above are required to file the financial information of the projects to the Revenue Department.

Virote Kongwong, a member of the NACC’s sub-committee on public procurements, said that the companies were notified in writing on July 28 of the decision and urged to explain why they failed to comply with the requirement.

The companies which could not clarify this point would be immediately blacklisted, he said. The blacklisting process would kick off in August.

"The number of such companies remains unclear but there should be over 1,000 as some have won 50-60 contracts each," he said, adding that the Revenue Department is yet to receive the financial information of 71,386 projects.

It seems a bit incredible that the government can award 71,386 projects that are in effect running off the books with no contribution to the coffers.

How can you not track that? What sort of background checks are in place before award?

Methinks the investigation should be expanded to those who authorized the 1,000+ companies in the first place...........................

It will all be above board, fair, honest - just wait and see the outcome as all will be explained in clear terms as to the misunderstanding/s.

The very least that can be done in the interim is to name the companies, the director/s general and the ministers, including the deputy prime ministers.

I seem to recall the US government handing out pallets of cash to unregistered 'security operators' in Iraq.

Try getting a hold of government funds for various programs in Australia. If you write your own tax declaration, do you think their isn't wide scale rorting?

At least those alliances made to suck from the government teat in the past 15 yrs under the shins various governments will need to start thinking.

Unless this government has issued over 71,000 contracts, why wouldn't they blame past administrations? And when it turns out that the government officials haven't done their jobs because the companies are owned by ex-government ministers, the stench of corruption will again be in the air.

The accountability required of ministers, civil employees, cabinet members, the temples/abbots, school officials, contractors working off of bid documents, etc has been basically non existent for dog years. So far this does not seem to have drawn too much attention from the present adminstration.

Granted they have made a few arrests, demotions, inactive amd transfer posting. But there is so much more to be done and it cannot wait for any ''attaboy'' award. Get downright mean, be a man in charge (boss) and run the country as it should be run, not according to Thai custom /culture, if you want Thailand to be a part of the developed world drastic change must be made. The present PM has a great oppurnity to be credited with getting it on the way or there if he has the fortitude to do what must be done.
