Hi Guys ,

So I have just returned back from LOS through the visa exempt entry which was no problem entering the kingdom Even though I had a minor criminal record(no drugs).

The next question is if I wanted a long term visa due to maybe I will be marrying my long term girlfriend the next year or so, will I have any issues with obtaining a long term visa because of the crim record?

Is It a definite no go or are there ways around this ? I am 48 with a UK passport .

Really would like to know what type of visa,s would be suitable ?

Thanks

No problem at all. No police check report is required for the non-O visa and subsequent marriage extensions you will need.

Until you get married, you can continue to get tourist visas or visa-exempt entries, depending on the length of your visits. With a double-entry tourist visa you can, with one border run, stay in Thailand close to six months.

thanks Maestro

So applying for this Non O visa and marriage extensions is simple?

Do I need to leave the kingdom at any time to extend? Thanks again

With the !marriage certificate, getting the non-O visa is simple. You can even apply for it at the local immigration office (change of visa), then with proof of 400k in your Thai bank account or income of 40k per month get the one-year marriage extension

Sorry to be pedantic but visa "conversions" can only be done in Bangkok

Actually there are reports of the Jomtien office accepting the conversion application and sending it to Bangkok. Other offices might do the same. Which for the applicant means it's done at the local office.

Bangkok is the only place you can do the conversion based upon qualifying for an extension based upon marriage.

Jomtien and some other offices can only accept the applications based upon retirement.

The OP stated in a year or so.

If he waits until he is 50, he can get a Non Imm O Visa in the UK, then do the extension based on marriage at his local Immigration office in Thailand, subject to meeting the financial requirements.

Regardless of Visa conversions, a quick trip to Savanakhet is the most that would be required anyway for a married man to acquire a Multi Entry O based on marriage.

If and when he's prepared and qualified for extensions based on marriage, why would he need/want a multi entry visa that would require border runs? A single entry, followed by extension of stay and then he would only need to do 90 day reports.

to what extent if any will the introduction of the Advance Passenger Processing System (APPS) in December change things upon entry into the country in that the immigration officers will have details of any criminal conviction ?

None to the average person, other than a 35 baht charge.

This APPS system will only highlight those hardened criminals on the run and seeking refuge in Thailand. It will cross check with the FBI or Interpol wanted lists, which are shared Internationally, nothing more.

In the UK my information is protected under the Data Protection Act, unless I give signed permission to make my record accessible. That information just isn't available to any Tom, Dick or Harry.

As part of my employment in the UK I was regularly subjected to 'Disclosure' checks. It took 2 weeks for my employer to gain that information, after I signed in agreement, and it cost a lot more than 35 baht!
