The inspection sectors of Vietnam and Cambodia will prioritise cooperation in training and improving professional competence of inspectors while increasing the exchange of experience in thematic inspections.

The consensus was reached during talks between a delegation from the Government Inspectorate of Vietnam and their counterparts from the Ministry of National Assembly-Senate Relations and Inspection of Cambodia in Phnom Penh on August 7.

At the meeting, the officials held that collaboration between the two agencies have been enhanced practically, thus contributing to the traditional friendship between the two countries.

The two sides have maintained the exchange of high-ranking delegations and experience and supported each other in professional training, they said.

They also took the occasion to share experience on the settlement of complaints and denouncements as well as the fight against corruption in the respective countries.

Deputy Inspector General Tran Duc Luong, who led the Vietnamese delegation, and Secretary of State Chheng Saroeun, who headed the Cambodian side, agreed to continue amending the cooperative agreement reached by the two agencies.

Earlier, the Vietnamese inspectors were received by President of the Cambodian Senate Sai Chhum, who expressed his thanks to the Vietnam Government Inspectorate for supporting the Cambodian side over the past time.

The host suggested the two agencies step up their cooperation and contribute more to the traditional relations between the two countries.

During their stay in Cambodia from August 6-10, the Vietnamese inspectors will pay a courtesy visit to Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Assembly-Senate Relations and Inspection Men Sam An and visit a number of localities in the country.

PHNOM PENH (Khmer Times) – The Cambodian government has decided to create an 11-member committee to receive, return and verify the maps sent from the United Nations (UN), according to the announcement on August 6. The decision was made following the approval from the UN to let Cambodia borrow the maps.

On July 6, Prime Minister Hun Sen sent a letter to UN Secretary General Ban-Ki Moon asking to borrow the maps made between 1933 and 1953 by the Indochina Geographical Service, said to have been submitted to the UN in 1964. It was not until August 5 that the secretary general responded and allowed Cambodia to borrow the maps, with a few exceptions, conditions and understandings.

Ban-Ki Moon was quoted in the August 5 letter as saying, “While we could not find the map as described in Your Excellency’s letter, we have found some maps from the archive of the United Nations Dag Harmmarskjold Library in electronic form or a published copy that are beneficial for your government.”

TBONG KHMUM (Khmer Times) – Less than a kilometer from the border with Vietnam in Tbong Khmum Province, Sok Sokha shades herself from the midday sun next to her small store.

She slowly rocks her sleeping daughter in a hammock while a group of shirtless men play cards at an outdoor café next door.

The goods in Ms. Sokha’s store illustrate the economic reality of the area; bags of snack food with names like Qùa than ky and Phuc Hao hang down from a clothesline.

They are all from Vietnam, as are the other products at her store. Once every three days, Ms. Sokha hops on her motorbike, leaving her village of Beoung Chrong for a Vietnamese town four kilometers across the border.

“The border is always open,” she says, smiling.

Mr. Rainsy said he bought the maps from The National Institute of Geography in France for $168.

During a ceremony handing over the border maps yesterday morning, CNRP Senator Hong Sok Hour said that his party decided to give the 26 maps to the researchers so they could study them and verify the border with other maps as well as the current one the government is using to demarcate the border with Vietnam.

These 26 maps handed over were digital copies on a DVD.
