KHON KAEN: -- A SENIOR European Union diplomat has visited the Daodin activist student group in Khon Kaen province to see if they had illicit items such as weapons and to get an update on their activities.

The inspection by Sandra De Waele, head of the political, press and information section for the EU delegation to Thailand, took place on Friday.

It followed a meeting between EU officials and the New Democracy Movement - which includes Daodin members - in Bangkok on July 28.

The headquarters is a short distance from Khon Kaen University, where the Daodin members study. It also serves as a residence for the student activists.

Security concerns

Friday's development came amid concerns by security officials that the activists may have contraband in their possession, key NDM member Jaturaphat "Pai" Boonpattararaksa said.

"So, we wanted to make it right by having a third party check whether or not we possess any weapon or any illegal articles," he told The Nation over the phone.

Pai said NDM members in Bangkok and the Northeast were still being trailed and visited by security officers.

That had caused concerns to many people including international agencies like the European Union, he said.

"So, Sandra visited us to talk to us about the situation we're facing as well," he said.

I suspect all hope that the EU would lose interest in the goings-on within the Thai borders will have taken a battering.

The EU is rightly concerned as to how signatories to international human rights and other treaties actually fulfil those voluntary obligations. Backsliders will be viewed even less favourably than countries which did not sign, and this will be reflected in trade and commercial practices. Thailand may well be held up as a poor example because Thailand considers international treaties, not as collective obligations by civilised countries, but as passports to the privileges enjoyed by civilised countries - mostly trade and diplomatic privileges.

I suspect this is not good news for those who don't want to think about a fisheries red card in October.

Yes this is a Junta light so far but, intimidation and forbidding eating sandwiches by more than 5 people, or summoning a citizen for "attitude adjustment", etc. when uttering an opinion the "powers that be" don't like, can be escalated ad infinitum.

A country that signs an international treaty or covenant has to abide by the terms of the document but, TIT and such document is perceived as a free pass to enjoy trade and diplomatic privileges.

However, TIT and abiding by the rules and principles of humans rights, commerce and other covenants is really not a priority of the powers that be, past or present.

Why the hell do we have to pay for a layer of EU bureaucrats living and doing who knows what in Thailand? How big is this establishment? What is their output and how do they add value to the EU, its member countries and its taxpayers?

Another wheeze dreamed up by those member countries who really want a federal Europe, with their own nation's interests top of the agenda of course.

I voted to join a common market in 1975 and still believe in the EU. But not how it's been run with huge amounts of superfluous bureaucrats, and allowing member countries for forge and lie about meeting requirements.

Certain EU members lied about their figures to gain membership; and then lied some more to join the Euro. Some countries implement directives and then enforce them; others sort of implement them and don't really exactly worry too much about enforcement.

The richer countries can afford the principles. The ones with traditional work ethics.
