Thai Grocery Store In South London

Recommended Posts

I know there’s a few others on here who are currently living in London. Are any of you able to help me – I am looking for a Thai grocery store, in the South London area. I've just started a new job in Southwark, so anywhere in the SE1 kind of area would be great. There was a great one next door to my last office, but that was in Hammersmith which is too far for me now. Oh and I live in Bromley so if you know of one near there that would be equally good.

Anyone know? Any help much appreciated. I might not be in Thailand anymore but cooking Thai food still helps me to pretend.

Cheers!

you could pm the er.. exPM?

He might know. Bbc reported he went grocery shopping yesterday.

otherwise, go to the top of this page, and in the search bar, type in thai food in london. dozens of threads with info for you.

that`s why search exists. Don`t be afraid.

You`re welcome!

Both those mentioned are good.................Wing Yip & See Woo. There is also Hoo Hing in Mitcham.

There used to be Promt Thai in Twickenham, but they moved to Southall, then they've moved again. They were the real tops for cheap Thai imports. They used to supply all three big shops.Don't know where they are now though, but I think they're still going strong.

Closest Thai supermarket to you in SE1 is in Gerrard Street (you'll make it in a lunchtime or after work easily). Can't remember the name (New Moon Loon???), but it's the only Thai supermarket in Chinatown (or was for years -- dunno if there's another now, but I doubt it). Have pretty much everything you'll need. Cheap frozen Tiger prawns, fresh lime leaves, Thai basil, etc., etc. Small bottles of Chang (by the case) are also cheaper than you'd pay in a farang bar in Si Lom/Sukhumvit/etc. (and if you chat the Thai owner up a bit you'll get a discount).

If you're after larger quantities and want really fresh* Thai fruit/veg (on a par with many places in Bangkok), get a day pass to Nine Elms (New Covent Garden), also easily reached from SE1, but you'd probably have to go before work!

Wave hello to my flat for me (opposite LCP) when you're on the roundabout :o

*The place on Gerrard Street gets most of its fresh stuff from Nine Elms, but not daily -- if the fruit/veg looks less than tip-top, try going back the next day.

Loon Fung recently opened up a new store in Silvertown - turn left when coming off the woolwich ferry - has a huge selection of thai sauces, veg, herbs, etc more than seewoo. Also has noodle bar inside.

You have to be a member so take a utility bill/bank statement with you to join.

Thanks folks, and MarkBKK - I'm going to try your place on Gerrard Street this week! Will wave hello to your flatmate! Is the Thai owner male or female?!

there is a small supermarket in Orpington high street at the roundabout end. Is run by phillipine people but stock thai food supplies too.

Thanks Boo, I heard about this actually, I used to live in Orpington and my Mum still does. I haven't tried it yet though as driving (and finding somewhere to park etc) seems quite daunting on a Saturday, and my Mum wasn't sure whether it still existed. I'll try it now I know it is though. I assume it's not open on a Sunday.

Do you live in that area Boo?

My husband & I live in Bromley too. We have been told of a thai tattooist who has set up in Bromley too. I think I will open a supermarket there & make Bromley a little Thailand :D. Most other areas with a lot of thai people tend to be on the other side of London & we are sadly lacking in the south east/kent borders.

Edited: recall you are english too so thai translation might be asking too much :o ha ha

Wicked idea!!! Whereabouts in Bromley do you live? I'm in Bromley North, opposite the snooker club. What do you think of The King and I?

I'm sure I can contribute to making Bromley a little Thailand in some way!! I make a good Pad Thai?!!?!

I went to school with the owner of the King & I. Hubbie worked there for a while too. The food is good if a bit pricey but for us it's a bit of a busmans holiday so tend not to eat there too often. Do you ever go to the noodle place in east street? Miso - they do really good noodle soup.

THere are a couple of places I know, but I can't reemember the names. They both sell a variety of Oriental foods including plenty of Thai ingredients both fresh and some other familiar names (Hales Blue Boy Syrup anyone?).

One is in Peckham, five minutes walk from Peckham Rye Station just before the Morrison's car park.

The other is in Camberwell, on Denmark Hill opposite Butterfly Walk and McDonalds.

Female. Just smile, say hello in Thai, mention how good it is to get Thai stuff, and you should get the discount! (on the case of Chang)

(I'd better cover myself -- haven't been there since 2003, but for years it was the best place I could find in central London) :o

http://www.thai4uk.com/delivery.html

will take orders on line and save all that walking around and busfares in London...you know how much there are now......and deliver I believe up to 20 Kgms of you fav Thai foods for £4-50.

Apart from that we tend to use Lung F and Hua Hing and sometimes drop into the one next to East West in Hammersmith (suspect you old haunt) :o

Boo - I haven't been to MISO, I don't go to restaurants you can't smoke in! Might have to try it out though, thanks. I quite like the King and I, although yeah it is a bit pricey and that. I'm a vege but my friend swears their chicken satay is the best he's ever had...

Mae Ping in Beckenham is quite nice too.

I was born in Bromley Hospital - are you from that way too farangconnection?

Madmitch - thanks that is useful as that is not too far for me.

MarkBKK - I am also female, so I don't think chatting up will work! Planning to go there this week though, as that's the nearest to where I work.

Thanks for your suggestions!

Nah, I meant ''chat up'' in the ''talk nicely to'' way, not ''Hello darling, fancy a drink?'' way ... :o

Top of the Walworth road, on the right before you hit the council flats walking to Elephant and Castle tube is a Vietnamese grocery which sells Thai stuff.

I know Rinrada, don't remind me of this sad fact... :D (about the restaurants and pubs anyway) at least I don't think that will happen in Thailand!

Thanks Samran, that's even better as that's easy walking distance from my office. Cheers!
