Hi

Well living here and married to a Thai.. I needed dental work and previous visit to the Banglamung hospital for minor work was cheap enough. Now I need rear cap and had it checked 250 baht open mouth.

Low and behold the young doctor told me 5,000 Baht at a public hospital ?

Research and asking amate he had his done for 5000 at Smile clinic Sth Pattaya... Yes right in the tourist trap.. How the hell can the public hospiatal tell me 5000. What a absolute rort

Prayuth mentioned there over charging well that is a understatement :)

Anyone have any thoughts or recomendations on the matter

Cheers

My last crown cost me 12k in Bangkok at Rama 9 hospital. I paid about the same in Piyavate hospital too with the sane dentist.

5k seems a good price to me.

Like anything else, sometimes you need to shop around....some places are just more expensive than others for the exact same products/service--even medical/dental related.

5k is very cheap cant see what the OP is whinging about, if he thinks this is expensive he needs to get on a plane and go back to farangistan see how much it costs

2 crowns + 4 veneers - 65k at BPH which i thought was reasonable

That seems cheap.....but you can just take out the faulty teeth, that should cost 250 Baht per piece only.

I am in the process of having a root canal and crown put on. Total will be around ฿6,000,, which is cheap for farangland, but this is Thailand and at a Thai government hospital. I thought it was expensive for Thais, so asked if they paid the same, I was told yes.

OP,

When you say "public hospital" what exactly do you mean?

Do you mean a government hospital, private hospital, etc? Both govt and private hospitals are open to the public. It's just in govt hospitals they also provide care under the Thai 30 baht medical program (basically free medical and some dental care for Thais), commerical health insurance claims, and on a cash basis. But most private hospitals they deal in cash only and commercial private insurance coverage...no coverage under the 30 baht program unless it's an emergency/short term case like a serious/life threatening accident and their hospital was the closest. Private hospitals are generally more expensive than govt hospitals even on a cash basis...and sometimes private hospitals are big time more expensive that govt hospitals mainly because you are paying for a 5 star hotel/more pampering atmosphere.

He means a government hospital. But he seems misinformed about normal price for this. Assuming he needs root canal and crown (as opposed to just replacing a crown on a tooth that has a;ready had a root canal), private facilities would charge 15-20K for that and 5000 sounds quite right for a public hospital. Most of that cost is for the actual materials and manufacture of the crown, not the dentists's time.

It sounds about right for a good government/public hospital. Crowns are a 2 stage process and require some expertise, and are time consuming, and there are incidentals like injections. At a private clinic the cost might be 10k or more.

13k for 3 crowns - private dentist then these must be the cheapest materials you can get - half decent crowns typically come in at 8k to 12k each

Maybe some old tile cut into shape....Anyway taking out all the teeth is cheapest and for Chang beer no teeth is needed anyway.

There is no way anyone gets 3 crowns made of any sort of lasting material for 13K at a private clinic.

And yes, Thais not covered under one of the national health schemes do pay 5K for crowns at government hospitals. But most of them are, either one of the two SS schemes or the "universal" aka "gold card aka "30 baht" scheme (though I am not sure if that would ocver crowns, it might cover only the dental fee in which case they'd still have to pay close to 5K out of pocket -- as explained most of the cost is the material for the actual crown production, which is not done by the hospital, they have to send out to a private manufacturer for it.

The Universal health care cover scheme would be what your GF had and the 30 baht she paid was not the fee for the cleaning but rather a standard small copay assessed at every visit, medical or dental, regardless of what it is for. The rest of the cost is born by government subsidies paid to the hospital annually according to the number of people enrolled. No such subsidy is paid to hospitals for care given to foreigners.

By all means call the Smile clinic and other private clinics as well, and comparison shop at other government hospitals. You will find that you are not being overcharged, far from it.

There can be a big variation in dental work cost among clinics as some use low quality materials and may not take certain dental precautions. At least once or twice a year I hear some story where one of my in-laws got some major dental work done for what seems a very low price...and the story continues with the dental work not holding up, they go back for a repair of the dental work...spend more money in some cases...get mad at the dentist...etc....etc....etc.

Yeap, a couple times per year I hear these in-laws stories in their efforts to get the cheapest possible dental work from a dentist/dental clinic XYZ.

Just last month I had work done at my local government hospital. I had a missing tooth, so they removed the old crown on one side, found bad decay and had to do a root canal ฿3,700, they then made a denture made of a new crown for that tooth, a tooth for the missing tooth and a caped tooth for the next one. All the work and the crown, new tooth, and caped tooth, ฿7,600. However they obviously have some wiggle room, because I mentioned they had told me it would be ฿7,000, so she remade a new bill for that amount. A good price I felt.

Yes hence my attendance to the hospital the young Thai specialist seemed very educated and switched on. Hospitals are the safest bet here, I think

fest bet
