Koh Sok

Featured Replies

We are planning to go to Koh Sok.

Can anyone recommend where to stay or what to see

Thanks

The Khao Sok Paradise Resort is good, a little rustic but staff are friendly and the food is good.

Note that during the wet season (approx June to December) access to the waterfalls and some of the caves is closed.

HI Stocky

Is this place on the water.Do you recall approximate prices. Or anything else you care to add

Thanks

No it's not on the lake, about 10km from the lake. I can't remember exactly what we paid somewhere around Bht1,000 a night.

Google it, I'm sure there are plenty of reviews at TripAdvisor or Agoda.

You mean 'Cheaw Larn' - Ratchapa Dam.

I wrote a report on GT-Rider a year of so back .. Theres a number of a boat man who can hook you up.

Most western tourists will book expensive packages, but staying on the government bungalows is really not expensive. Food is inexpensive, the 'raft keepers' go out of their way to make you feel at home, free canoes and life jackets. We dropped off some tourists on the way out - we could only get bookings on the farthest set of bungalows, and some places were pretty grotty.

There are some amazing resorts there, tho' .. one even has a swimming pool, but you will pay for it.

Anyway, heres a collective report .. and you will find my report on how to do it on the cheap.

I found Khao Sok, the area before the park entrance, a bit of a con, the bungalows and food are expensive and theres no alternative.

You are better, getting straight out onto the lake in the morning, perhaps booking a round tour, there are some caves and islands there - the whole place is beautiful anyway. Then getting out on the canoes in the afternoon, swimming, fishing - Then enjoying a dinner. 12 hours is enough out there.

The boats men want to be back in the morning ASAP to get another run of tourists .. the place is massive.

Then ( when we were there ) you could camp by the Dam .. If you have a tent and sleeping bags, then its far better to camp there rather than visit the khao sok national park.

Wow. Thats the kind of information I was looking for.

Thanks. That covered everything

There is a serious variety of accommodation, and everyone is different in what they want or will endure. Caves, rivers, waterfalls, fishing,

wilderness..The place I stayed at was very rustic. Walking challenged. Wildlife was amazing and would spend the mornings across the channel,

ten - fifteen minutes, trying to get pictures of wildlife, elephants, buffalo, guru, monkeys etc.in my kayak. Frustrating as there was an

incredible amount of wildlife, and could hear them thumping about, but were very sensitive to disturbance. Cheap and three good meals included.

750 baht per person. I really enjoyed just sitting there in the kayak listening to the gibbons howling, and the animals rustling in the bush

hoping for a picture. A lot of times just a matter of timing. Easy to get boat to take you to other parts of the reservoir where there is something

to see. Just have to do your homework..
