BANGKOK: -- HUNDREDS OF people from neighbouring countries have crossed into Thailand to take part in the "Bike for Mom" rides, being held across the country today.

Groups of more than 500 visitors from Vietnam and Cambodia yesterday crossed the border from Poipet to Aranyaprathet in Sa Kaew province.

Police Lt-Colonel Benjapol Rodsawat, deputy commander of Sa Kaew Immigration Police, said the tourists told him they wanted to see the "historic day" for themselves in which tens of thousands of cyclists will participate in rides all around Thailand to honour Her Majesty the Queen.

Also, a team of 24 bikers from Cambodia cycling from Phnom Penh crossed the border into Trat yesterday to join the Bike for Mom event in the eastern province.

Cambodian Danai Komkai, 40, a leader of the group, said that he lived in a refugee camp in Thailand at the age of three. He later studied in Thailand and his further study in the United States was funded by Her Majesty the Queen.

The event's organisers in provinces throughout the country expressed readiness yesterday for the historic cycling event today.

Some provinces also planned to host attempts to break a cycling record in which the most people cycle together at the same time, for mention in the Guinness Book of World Records.

In Bangkok, some 8,000 police and military officers, as well as officials from Bangkok Metropolitan Administration will be stationed along the bike route today, deputy national police chief Lt-General Prawut Thavornsiri said.

He said explosive device experts would be deployed to examine the route in the morning.

Ten thousand copies of a special edition of a government newsletter will be distributed to people gathering along the route to welcome His Royal Highness Crown Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn, deputy spokesman Maj-General Sansern Kaewkamnerd said. Its cover features a photo of the Crown Prince cycling.

The spokesman explained that the newsletter would be a souvenir for those who missed the opportunity to take part in the biking event. Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha assigned the Public Relations Department to undertake the publishing.

Prayut, in his weekly address |on Friday night, encouraged peo-ple to submit photographs of the Bike for Mom event for a chance to win trophies from the Crown Prince.

He said the Ministry of Interior and the Guinness World Records were joining hands to publicise the event in which people come together to demonstrate love for their mothers.

The PM admitted the big ride would inevitably inconvenience motorists due to road closures. However, he pleaded for understanding and cooperation, asking people to refrain from going near event venues.

It won't matter if the Guinness Book people are around or not as LoS will make an announcement on their behalf and no prizes for guessing what it will be.

Interesting to see that, in all the "Bike for Mum" photos I've seen leading up to this event and all the people I've seen on the road ready to take part today, there seems to have been almost 100% of participants wearing cycle helmets. Yet the wearing of crash helmets for the far more dangerous activity of motorcycling is, for all practical purposes, optional and usually ignored, at least in my vicinity. I'd also bet that these cycle helmets are more effective than many of the unbelievably low-quality motorcycle helmets that are available & occasionally used.

Guinness World Records expects result by 7 p.m.

BANGKOK, 16 August 2015 (NNT) -The Guinness Book of World Records today set up its operating center inside the 1st Infantry Battalion, the 1st Infantry Regiment of the King's Own Body Guard, ready to count the number of cyclists attending the “Bike For Mom” campaign.

One of the center’s staff explained that the Android smartphone is the main tool used in the recording process. Each one of the associate staff members has a phone that contains a barcode scanning application entitled "BFM SCANNER” specifically designed for the event.

The barcode scanning takes place at two points, the Start and the Checkpoint. In Bangkok, the first was at Dusit Palace Plaza, while the latter was at an overpass in front of Surasak Montree School and then at a football stadium of the 1st Infantry Battalion where the operating center is located.

Around three hundred student volunteers for the scanning process came from Kasetsart University, Suan Dusit Rajabhat University, Dhurakij Pundit University and Siam Business Administration College.

When cyclists arrive at the 1st Infantry Battalion, the student volunteers immediately scan their barcode and send the realtime result via an online system to the center. It is expected to take up to an hour for the scanning.

No later than 6 p.m. today, the barcode count from all provinces will be sent to the center. By 7 p.m., the Guinness World Record committees will judge whether or not the Bike For Mom has conformed to its regulations. People can keep updated on the realtime scanning result at www.bikeformom2015.com.

The regulations meant that the recording started simultaneously nationwide. The first scan at the Start and the following one at four km. from the start. In Bangkok, only civil servants and individuals were counted. All cyclists were required to ride continuously without a rest and had to stay in line, while maintaining a stopping distance of two-bike lengths.

The past is gone we will remember the ones that are old enough to remember that is. The youngsters will remember there battles to knock a great thing like the bike ride and to say remember 60 odd years ago is so so wrong. Seems to me this should be called the LET'S KNOCK THAILAND AND WHINGING FORUM. Not like easy go back to your home land bye

Good to see the Right Honourable Absit partake in this as well.

Yes, Uberlord Abhisit was there as well. As were 19,000 other people. Would you like to name them all and give them bogus titles also? Edited by Bob12345

I thought people who ride bicycles are cyclists and those who ride motorcycles are 'bikers'. Why does TV get this so offensively wrong?

As an occasional pedal cyclist and 40+ years as a motorcyclist, I have to ask what on earth is "offensive" about this usage?
