An Interesting look back at "The Rite of Spring"

100 years ago today, 'The Rite of Spring' incited a riot in a Paris theater

It began with a bassoon and ended in a brawl. One hundred years ago today, Russian composer Igor Stravinsky debuted The Rite of Spring before a packed theater in Paris, with a ballet performance that would go down as one of the most important — and violent — in modern history.

Today, The Rite is widely regarded as a seminal work of modernism — a frenetic, jagged orchestral ballet that boldly rejected the ordered harmonies and comfort of traditional composition. The piece would go on to leave an indelible mark on jazz, minimalism, and other contemporary movements, but to many who saw it on that balmy evening a century ago, it was nothing short of scandalous.

MASSIMO MERCELLI gained his diploma from the Conservatorio G.B. Martini of Bologna with the highest marks at a very early age. Mercelli, a student of the famous flautists Maxence Larrieu and André Jaunet, at the age of 19 became the first flute of the Teatro La Fenice of Venice and won the ‘Francesco Cilea Prize’, the International Competition ‘Giornate Musicali’ and the Stresa International Competition. He plays regularly in the most important concert halls of the world: Carnegie Hall in New York, Herculessaal and Gasteig in Munich, Colon Theatre in Buenos Aires, Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, Auditorium RAI in Turin, Victoria Hall in Geneva, Saint Martin in the Fields and Wigmore Hall in London, Parco della Musica in Rome, Philharmonic S. Petersburg, Philarmonica in Warsaw, Tchaikovsky Hall in Moscow and at the festivals of Ljubljana, Berlin,Santander, Vilnius, S. Petersburg, Bonn, Cervantino, Rheingau, Jerusalem and Warsaw. He performs with artists such as Yuri Bashmet, Krzysztof Penderecki, Philip Glass, Michael Nyman, Massimo Quarta, Ennio Morricone, Luis Bacalov, Peter-Lukas Graf, Maxence Larrieu, Aurèle Nicolet, Anna Caterina Antonacci, Ramin Bahrami, Albrecht Mayer, Gabor Boldowsky, Jiri Belolhavec, Federico Mondelci, Jan Latham Koenig, Catherine Spaak, Susanna Mildonian, and with orchestras such as the Moscow Soloists, the Wiener Symphoniker, the Solisti della Scala, the Prague Philarmonia, the S. Petersburg Philharmonic, the Virtuosi Italiani, the Salzburg Soloists, the Moscow Chamber Orchestra, the F.Liszt Chamber Orchestra and the Musici.

He is the artistic director and founder of the Emilia Romagna Festival and since 2001 has been a member of the directing committee of the European Festivals Association (EFA) and in April 2011 he was elected as vice president of this prestigious European association.He played in the first performance of ‘Facades’ by Philip Glass accompanied by the composer on the pianoforte, he has performed at the Grande Sala of the Mozarteum of Salisburg and has held a masterclass for the Rostropovich Foundation. On 11th September 2006 he played at the UNO Auditorium in New York. During the 2008 season he performed at the Berlin Philharmonic during the official season and at the Moscow Philharmonic in a Galà with Yuri Bashmet and Gidon Kremer. In August 2008 as a soloist in the premier of Ennio Morricone’s Cantata ‘Vuoto di Anima Piena’ directed by the composer himself and at the Warsaw Philharmonic he participated in the festival celebrating Krzysztof Penderecki’ 75th birthday. During the 2009/10 season he played at the MITO Festival of Milan, the Prague National Theatre with Denise Graves, in China with Luis Bacalov at the Shanghai Expo and performed the world premier of the concert for flute and orchestra by Michael Numan dedicated to him. In January 2011 he performed at the Tchaikovsky Hall in Moscow under the direction of Yuri Bashmet performing ‘Contrafactus’ by Giovanni Sollima, dedicated to him and played at the MusikVerein in Vienna. In 2012 he played in Russia, China, Europe and South America in important concert halls such as The Philharmonic of Vilnius and Prague.In September 2012 the CD ‘Massimo Mercelli plays Philip Glass’ came out, with the integral music for flute by Philip Glass edited from ‘Orange Mountain Record’.

Massimo Mercelli has been a member of the juries for the following international competitions:International Competition of Geneva; Concours de Flute Jean-Pierre Rampal – Concours Internationaux de la Ville de Paris, Concert Artist Guild of New York (USA), Fischoff Chamber Music Competition of South Bend (USA) Beijing Flute Competition (China). As a very much appreciated teacher, he has held Masterclasses and lectures at: Oslo Norges Musikkhogskole (Norway), Sibelius Academy in Helsinki (Finland), Cleveland Institute of Music (USA), Akron University (USA), Trinity College of Music (UK), Mannes School of New York (USA), Singapore Conservatory (Singapore), Oberlin Conservatory (USA), Bangkok University (Thailand), North Carolina University (USA), Universitad of Santiago (Chile), Taiwan University (Taiwan), Matan Project – Tel Aviv (Isreal) and Rostropovich Foundation (Vilnius, Lithuania).Among his latest commitments of particular importance are: the recording of the J.S. Bach’s sonatas with Ramin Bahrami under the DECCA label, the world premier of Sofia Gubaidulina’s new concert, dedicated to him, his participation in the concert for the celebration of Krysztoff Penderecki’s 80th birthday at the Warsaw Philharmonic and the Sinfonietta for Flute and Strings, an exclusively performed piece, as well as his participation in the concert ‘Viva Italia’ as part of the International Winter Arts Festival of Sochi and the cultural programme of the Olympic games.For his promotional activity in the music field he has received awards twice from the European Commissariat for Culture JAN FIGEL and from the French vice minister of Culture (Prague University and Pompidou Centre, Paris).
