I have quite a day ahead of me next week at Phuket Immigration - retirement extension of stay / 90 day report plus transfer of Non O visa from old Canadian passport to my new passport.

I read that a letter is required from the issuing embassy confirming the old and ew passport numbers. I asked the Canadian embassy in Bangkok this week while getting my income verification and the embassy official told me they don't issue such a letter.

Can anyone tell me if this is the case in Phuket for all new passports?

Any work arounds?

If an issue, can I just show the Non O in my old passport?

Thanks, Headgame.

Nor sure but I think Phuket immigration insists upon you having the letter. This is the first time I can recall a report of the Canadian embassy not doing the letter.

You could try using the receipt you got when you paid for your passport.

Immigration will do an annotation about the non-o visa that gave you the entry you have been extending and transfer that entry stamp. The will also transfer your current extension of stay stamp.and the entry stamp for you last entry.

I am sure that Phuket immigration will look for the letter.

Does the new passport include detail of the passport being replaced? If so that may help ..... you should make a copy of the relevant page

Thanks for the quick replies.

I have emailed the embassy begging for an expedited letter.

Lesson learned. I should have been far more demanding when at the embassy.

Oh, well. They are great at the embassy so I'm sure it will work out.

I'll update next week after my visit to Immigration.

UPDATE

I just spoke to the Canadian embassy and again they confirmed that they do not issue the letter.

However, I was asked to open up my old passport to the page opposite to the data page and there was an official stamp confirming that the old passport number has been replaced with the new passport number. She said that has never been refused by Phuket immigration before.

I will assume she is right and find out for sure next Tuesday. Report to follow.

For a time last year it was a requirement to have a confirmation letter from your embassy if a new passport was issued. Not any longer A transfer can be done but if your new extension is due within a few months you can wait to do the transfer at that time. If you need to leave the country take both PP's with you as the current visa in the old PP is still valid.

Not if the "visa" is actually an extension of stay which requires a re entry permit to maintain its validity.

Visas, of course , are never transferred .

The embassy letter is not required in case you have the old passport details in your new passport or when the new passport is used to enter Thailand.

In other cases the letter is required.

I just did my new Canadian passport in Pattaya. I handed my old passport to Immigration along with my new one. No charge and was told to come back the next day. Picked up the passport with all the stamps transfered.

Copies are required of new passport details page and old passport details page together with last extension and entry stamp.

If possible to the transfer together when applying for a new extension and everything will be done in one go.

You know next week is a short one, right? Phuket Immigration Office is closed Monday through Wednesday (18-20 July) for the holidays. The office will only be open two days next week: Thursday and Friday.
