My daughter is a full time student at an international school and she normally gets q year extensions on her original Ed visa provided her papers from the school and otherwise are in order. Her passport expires in January 2016 but current 1 year extension of stay on Ed visa expires in December 2015. When getting the next 1 year extension in December, assuming I don't have my new passport by then, do they only extend until January 2016, the validity of the original passport or do they extend for 1 full year anyway? Thanks for your help.

If you don't have a full year left on your passport validity the extension will be only be done up to the date your passport expires. When you get a new passport you have to apply for a new extension when the shortened one ends.

And when re-applying, is it a full re-apply, like bring in all the same papers as brought in a few months earlier, or do they reference the ones in the file from a few months back and therefore is it just a formality of bringing in the old passport with the visa and the new passport and them simply adding the new visa with more time into the new passport?

You will have supply all the supporting documents again when you apply for the new extension.

When you go in with the new passport they will do an annotation of your visa and move you entry and most recent extension stamp from the old passport. Then they will do the new extension in the new passport
