Forensic science police checking DNA on remain of backpack
The Nation

BANGKOK: -- Forensic science police are trying to extract DNA samples from remain piece of backpack that carried the fatal bomb in the Erawan Shrine attack, a source said.

The source said police plan to use DNA of victims to eliminate the found samples to try to pinpoint a possible sample of the suspect.

But police are not confident of the success of the DNA collecting because the samples might have been destroyed by heat generated by the blast, the source added.

So why are they doing it anyway?

They want to sound all CSI and 21st century, rather than Keystone Cops and 20th century.

Yeah, CSI perverted the public's perception of criminal investigations. Everyone now thinks that laboratory forensics can solve all crimes. In fact, old-fashioned gumshoe detective work is what leads to convincing evidence and convictions. Laboratory forensics can help, and corroborate certain theories, but it is rarely a crime solver.

Isn't it ironic that RTP is concerned that the DNA evidence might have been destroyed by the bomb blast, but they have no problem putting on their crappy chain-of-custody impaired DNA evidence at the trial for the Koh Tao murders?

Are these the same experts that were responsible for collecting and testing the DNA in the Ko Tao

murder cases? Have they at least attended a course or two since then?

Although CSI has given us an unrealistic expectation of forensic success, why is it that the Thai police insist on showing us that they ,their senior officers in shiny uniforms, and reporters, and random members of the public are all invited to trample all over any crime scene and be filmed doing so while the so called forensic police are pretending to do their job?

"police are not confident of the success of the DNA collecting because the samples might have been destroyed by heat". See, some of them have a little sense. Why are they doing this? Reminds me friends fridge magnet which read "Jesus is coming. Look busy."
