Don't worry about it for a few weeks at least. The Immigration Police chief Pol Lt-Gen Suwat Thamrongsrisakul has been sidelined and will soon be replaced.

They will need time to study the matter and decide on their policies under a new constitution. I think it's unlikely that the "new" regulations are going to be enforced, so that for the time being nothing will change.

Even if they will be enforced from October 1, your friend will have the option of obtaining a tourist visa (single entry) which will likely give him 6 months stay per visa. He will need to leave the country once every 6 months to travel to a Thai Consulate or Embassy in a neighboring country. His first trip for a visa will not be necessary until January 1.

In the meanwhile, stay cool and watch events unfold.

...........and I know a guy whos been here 9 years - visa ran out in 1998 - and has never left Thailand since

His logic: when I do leave at the airport I will have to pay Baht25K - end of subject. Now lets do the math of how much that has saved me over the last 9 years re: visa fees, re: plane tickets and/or 30 day visa runs. I have no family back home (Oregan USA), I have had no reason to leave is his thinking - its saved me a ton of cash.

Yes - he has worked (self employed as a fresh meat impoter/exporter - from Malaysia - which I think amounts to smuggling meat)

- and that is what happens, turn up at the airport as an overstayer and the max penalty will be Bht 25K - and no, you will not be "nicked" - the policy is to send you on your way!

And whatever he does, he should ignore your erroneous visa advice. A single entry tourist visa enables a stay in Thailand of 60 days, and can be extended by a further stay of up to 30 days.

However you cut it, that means a stay of a maximum of stay of 3 months on a single entry TR

visa.

No its 25k BUT read on...

If he gets a check by the cops, at the roadside, applying for a driving license. Let alone at the airport when he finally chooses to leave hes got serious explaining to do.

The bottom line is that if he gets caught its not just 25k+ he'll be getting slammed with. Try Jail time! A buddy of mine got thrown in the slammer for twenty days over! Admitedly he did start shouting and decrying the country etc but still.

The time inside isn't that long for visa overstay (relatively speaking) but once you leave the slammer its straight on a plane back to country of origin and a big red mark next to your name in the immigration files computer! Do not come back to thailand!

When I was in Sa Kaeo, Thai authorities were ready to issue me a visa if an official (government) organization were to write up an official contract for my volunteered services. He can speak with immigration here and see if they would do that for him as well.

Incorrect. As long as you do not have a criminal record in Thailand and it is an immigration offence only, you can jump on the next plane back to Thailand and be welcomed with open arms.

This statement is quite correct. Open arms I don't know, but next plane back to Thailand seems to be not a problem. (Case I know: overstay 2025 days).

Agreed. Also, if you have any depandants, who are Thai citizens, even with a criminal record they can't keep you out. Overstay would be an option for me if I didn't have a job. Can you do the time if caught?

OP - get a job you lazy *****. :o

It actually is 20,000 baht maximum overstay fine :o

Just to add a bit of information, if your consulate-issued visa has been extended 30 days following the initial 60 days, and you need some additional time, Immigration (at least in CM) will be happy to take 1950 baht and give you up to 20 days extra. All you have to do is supply them with a simple reason why. It may not be worth doing this as a matter of course, but honestly, if you really need those couple of weeks, and a trip abroad will only complicated whatever you are doing in Thailand, it's an option worth using.
