I live in CM in a house with its own bore hole, water reservoir/tank and large (1.4m x 0.4m) blue filtering cylinder - the water is pumped up from the bore into a filtering reservoir on top of the main tank, it drains into the main tank from where it is pumped through the blue cylinder into the house. Drinking water then passes through another 4-stage filter. The water in the house has recently turned discoloured and is starting to smell. I've got a different response (& price!) from every person I've asked for advice. I want to service or replace the stone/carbon/resin/sand in both the filtering reservoir on top of the main tank and the large blue filtering cylinder. Can anybody please tell me (1) what mix & grading of materials I should use & (2) where can I buy the materials in CM & about how much they will cost ? (3) how often should the filtering reservoir and blue cylinder be serviced? Many thanks in advance for any advice that is offered.

Is the water from the bore hole same as it was in the past or has it changed for the worse?

If it is the same then you need to work on the filter, if it is worse you may need another filter, a second one, or a new bore hole or ....

Have you backwashed your filters?

Nobody can tell you the kind of filter material you need without having knowledgeof the incomming water quality, more knowledge than your description has provided..

Can u identify the smell? Is it like a sewer or more like a sulphur smell? Seems likely that as the local drought continues the water level in the bore hole slowly goes down and all contaminates are concentrated. Bad smells are often harmless, but may suggest it ain't fit to drink.

Can you find the shop that sells the blue cylinder? If yes, ask them. Big shops hardly have any useful info, seek out specialized filter shops for good advice.

Khun EQ (pronounced eee-queue) has sorted our water system out on a couple of occasions on short notice and without wanting to sell us unnecessary gear. Most of our problems came from not understanding how often tanks and filters needed attention because the groundwater here is very rich in iron that only appears after it's been aerated. He recently changed all the filter material in a 60cm filter and the cost was 4500 baht - not much over the cost of the material and when you see how awful the job is you'll be pleased you didn't DIY!

His number is 0819 938 733 but note that he speaks virtually no English. His prices are very reasonable and we always give him a decent tip as people who will actually turn up to fix things are hard to come by. Good luck!
