Big Bike Accident on Highway 11 at Maeta

Wife and I heard an accident happen on Highway 11 in Maeta, Lamphun directly across from the Maeta amphur offices. We drove by about 20 minutes later headed to Lamphun Big C, ambulance and rescue vehicles where on the frontage road but the victims bike was off the right lane and into the center divide of the north bound lane and another car parked on the left shoulder. I was wondering if this hit any of the local Thai news stations this evening. Just wondering how the driver made out. It looked pretty bad.

Didn't go well. Just saw a friend of a friend post this on FB. Looks like a Farang lost his life and they may not know who he is yet.... too bad.

Not sure if a link will work.

Sharktooth - someone wanted some info, and by chance I found some info on a Thai outlet already shared over 10K times and thought I'd be helpful. No way for me to censor one pic yay, another pic nay. And did you read the Thai? I didn't think so. Anyway, go take up your argument with the original posters trying to help find the man's relatives or someone who can help ID him - article content and reason for mass reposting. Also, where we live.... Buddhism (with a good dash of Brahmic and Hindu influence), perhaps the body is just a body when we're gone and that's why cremation is ok. I'm not a fan of the gore, though you seem to be advocating for me being so. It's just what was there. Questions answered. Whatever - it's just how it works over here.

Like many of us, not necessarily a fan of the gore, just sharing an inconvenient truth.

I'm anything but a fan of gore. A sympathetic motorcycle rider - yes, that I am. I didn't walk over to the police cars and ambulance to look, but I did take a run up Highway 11 after the fact. Wasn't much to see. A bunch of cops on HW11 and a bunch of cops and rescue vehicles on the frontage road, and about 100 yard off to the right in the median was the bike. Large framed, black sportster.

Wife had an appointment with the Amphur hospital, so got the info on the victim yesterday. Actually, she sat next to me and said, "Sorry but to have for you some sad news." So no, I'm not a gore fan. I was praying for the guy's well-being as we past the crash site.

Wife said it was a Thai man riding solo from BKK to CM. There is a chicane of curves through Maeta on HW11, and fast traffic will blow through those corners at 120+, usually using both lanes and both side lanes to make the corners straighter. The victims motorcycle hit the right hand metal guard-rail around the apex of the curve. From what I saw after the accident and during our ride to the hospital, my guess is he dropped the bike at a speed he was unable to handle, bike slid into then under the railing hitting a 4x4 concrete sign post, the victim must have gone under or over the retaining wall, and the bike careered like a pool ball off of whatever it hit, and slid about 100 yard down the HW11 crossing both northbound lanes and impacting the median: there was a looong way between where the bike impacted and where it finally came to rest. The staff at the hospital said he suffered massive upper-body traumatic injuries. And like my wife said, I feel bad for him. Heck, maybe too much speed for the corner or perhaps a blowout. Destiny punched his ticket for him. I'm glad I didn't go over to look. Although we we're standing below the highway about 100 feet away, we just thought it might be a fender bender. But after 10 minutes there were way too many cops and rescue workers. Being 1 kilometer from the local hospital didn't do much good for the poor guy. And Maeta does have a pretty darn good ER room and some really caring staff. They didn't seem to be in any rush to get him there. Hard to believe the guy didn't die on the spot.

Wonder if any of the locals were having any babies at the time. He may end up being a local in the next lifetime. Lol.

Anyway, rest in peace my fellow motorcycle rider. With riding motorcycles, especially large motorcycles, there are risks and rewards. We accept the risks, because there reward is called Living at it's fullest.

Condolences to the family!
