NLA to consider referendum question on Sept 8

The Nation

BANGKOK: -- The National Legislative Assembly (NLA) will on September 8 vote on the option of adding an additional question to the planned referendum, NLA whip s Seree Suwanphanont revealed today.

The NLA will consider the questions proposed by 11 NLA subcommittees. The subcommittees were given the task of coming up with proposals last Tuesday, but five of them said they had no questions to propose.

NLA vice president Surachai Liengboonlertchai is in charge of collecting the questions, Seree said, adding that individuals can also propose questions and submit them to Surachai.

Asked if the additional question would be the same as the ones proposed by the National Reform Council (NRC), he said he had no idea and did not worry about the matter. The NRC will make a final decision next Sunday on whether one of the two questions - "two years of reform before elections" or "reconciliation government after election" - should be included.

The 2014 interim charter requires that the NRC and the NLA each propose an additional question for the referendum and table them for the Cabinet's consideration. The NRC must propose the question on the same day it votes on the draft charter, while the NLA must do it three days later.
