Drink Drive campaign ,now getting serious

The whole drink drive thing is overstated in my opinion, that is with regard to legal drink drive limits. Total BS. Yes, if you are totally pissed you are not capable of driving.

Bad driving is the issue here. If I have had a fair few beers I am quite capable of driving home on my moto, perfectly safely, without endangering anyone.

I have been know to let the GF drive with me on the back or get a moto taxi. Either way scary, and I think to my self I am endangering my life here by not driving myself which I know is a good deal safer, even after a good few beers. Just to avoid a problem with the police. I am safer driving myself. Fact!

The danger on the roads, are people driving badly, to fast. to aggressive, not paying attention. Drunk or sober!

I drive well, safely, defensively with consideration for other road users, I use my mirrors and look out ahead. Drunk (read well over DD limit) or sober!

The drinking is messing with your logic.

It's not about how good a driver you THINK you are, but the fact that alcohol makes you less good, no matter how good you think you were before drinking.

This is not a theory, but a proven scientific fact - your reflexes are impaired by alcohol.

Getting you off the roads and into a jail cell will make the roads safer.

What vehicles do you drive in Thailand Tropo ?

Just asking

Easy to stop drink driving. You have a national press release across the Country with a 3 month lead in time. After the amnesty period straight forward 3 month jail term no messing, no pay offs, no sick grannies, straight to the Jail.

I guarantee 90% of the current drink drivers including the idiots on Bikes in Pattaya would cease their activity overnight

I can not agree with you.

I think many Farrangs would take alternative transport home from the bars etc, but Thai people would carry on as before. The Prisons are grossly over crowded now , so your suggestion will never happen..................unfortunately !!

I won't drive when I'm totally pissed, but when I've had 4-8 beers I don't feel drunk at all and completely capable of driving and it's only a short ride home.

Obvious it could result in a huge problem when some other drunk motorcyclist pushes in front of my car and a crash is unavoidable with injuries as a result

With the same amount of alcohol I would drive in my own country as well, so it's not just a Thailand thing. In Thailand I mostly drive on my motorbike while in my own country I solely drive a car so there I could do more damage then here, however the chance of getting involved in an accident is a lot smaller in my own country as most people do abide by the rules there.

In Thailand it just feels more 'safe' as I know I can always buy myself out, one phone call to my lawyer is enough, in my own country they're real strict, might've to join some AA club or even jail time and no option to buy yourself out of it of course, could try but I bet that would make the situation only worst.

Anyway, none of it is any excuse, and we shouldn't drive after drinking so shame on me for treating it as a calculated risk.

@onemorechang: If Thai people drive 140km/hour pissed than farangs as well, we're not different species. I learned my lesson in a situation that scared the hell out of me (nothing happened) but it could've killed many including myself. Since than I only allow myself to drink a little and abide to speed limits and all that (4-8 beers is a little, sorry can't make it better than that wink.png

ps: Straight roads become real curvy at 180km/hour.

8 beers??? i could not walk after that many, and my alcohol body content would be the same as me, so jail too

The more checkpoints for drink driving.......the merrier.

In over 12 years of driving around Thailand I have never been asked to provide a breath specimen ever. Show my license and a quick check of the bike / car and that has been it. Any minor discrepancies perceived or not have been dealt with at the roadside without much grief. I feel there should be far more checkpoints around especially in the tourist / entertainment parts of the country.

Contrast Thailand to back home in the UK

A wet and miserable Bank holiday Monday and just coming back from a little shopping around 10-30 am. Turns a corner and a large police road block ahead. I am stopped and asked for ID, asked to open the boot and asked where I have been and where I am going. I am then breathalysed and allowed to continue on my way. They have no reason to check the car documents as they now have numberplate recognition cameras on a lot of their cars and at stationary positions everywhere. These cameras tell them whether your car is taxed, tested and insured or has any outstanding parking fines due. Any of these minor indiscretions and they simply take your car off you at the side of the road and of course charge you for the pleasure as well. being arrested for drink driving also gets you banned from the road for a minimum of 12 months along with a large fine and then there is the points on your license and the huge extra cost in getting insured after the ban.

When the Thai police start doing the same then you can honestly say they are having a clampdown and not the mickey mouse one you call it today back there.

OH and don't even get me started on the driving here compared to Thailand. I honestly can't wait to get back home there !

When you are complaining of Thailand no matter what it is please try to remember what it is like back home first before ranting about it

Why would what I drive be relevant to the discussion? Just asking.

Where is your "back home"? That's one thing I prefer about "back home", the road safety, regulations and enforcement thereof.

You can't get drunk idiots off the road without inconveniencing everyone else. It's an inconvenience I'm quite happy to put up with.

Im sure I saw a post in a different thread, with you stating you don't drive in Thailand because its to dangerous.

So how would you be inconvenienced then if you don't drive here ?

Am I mistaken or perhaps I have got you mixed up with a different poster

if so im sorry ?

Can I just ask, is it the view of the majority of you, that you have to get drunk or get stoned to have a good time?

I found I had far better times when stone cold sober so no longer drink, you should try it sometime.

LOL. I don't drive here as I don't have a car. I ride a motorcycle, which I'm sure you'll agree makes me even more vulnerable to drunk drivers.

.... and yes, I go through police checks here and there, so there is an inconvenience, which I don't mind.

I wonder if the value of the dark side condos and houses will go down as a result of these check points.

(In part a joke)

SHHhhhh. Oh, BTW 'we' (dark side) also have our police checks.
