Degree For Teacher's License

Featured Replies

Dear All

Thanks for all the replies pertaining to my queries on Thai nationality for my child.

I have a query on teaching English in Thailand which I seek your kind assistance once again.

I understand that its a legal requirement for people who want to teach English to have a degree prior to being eligible to obtain a work permit and a teacher's license.

1) If I have NO bachelor's degree but possess a 2 year Master of Arts degree from an ACU accredited Indian university, would it still be considered a degree which would would make me eligible for a work permit and a techer's license?

2) Do the Thai authorrities have a specific list of degrees which they recognize for issuing the teacher's license and work permit?

3) Is there a requirement for the degree to be in the Arts or Science field?

4) Who are the authorities on these matter and how do I contact them?

5)What are the other courses I should take and which are the courses recommended?

6)I'm a non native speaker of English, but very proficient in it, as English was my first language in school. What are my chances of obtaining employment?Would it be stable enough to see me through the stage whereby I obtain permanent residence in Thailand?

My heartfelt appreciation for all the assistance and thank you all once again.

Regards

Your qualifications sound suspect to me.

I have always understood that you have to get Bachelor's degree before studying for a Masters.

Where did you say you bought your degree?

That is what it sounds like to me.

Your Thai child/wife is your way into Thailand provided you have the required funds to support it or them.

1)Dear Astral,

I didn't buy my degree and do not believe in doing so. I had entered the work force after completing a diploma, and thereafter, with some experience, I applied to the university and was given the opportunity to take the entrance examinations for the Master's degree, which I had passed. I am currently doing the degree and would be due to graduate in 2007.

2)Dear Huski,

Is a two year Associate's degree acceptable to get the work permit and teacher's license?

3)Dear Dr Patpong

Thank you for your replies and your advises. I really appreciate your help.

I am aware that I could get in to Thailand on a NON-O with 400k, in the bank ,but what is stopping me from doing so is firstly, I am going to need work to support my family. Secondly, even if I draw income from some other souces, e.g, rental of house in my homeland, to think of staying here permanently on a NON-O is not an option either. I don't want to have my possessions, a wife and a family in a land where the future is uncertain. What am I going to do if my wife, kids and property are here and I go the immigration office only to be told that my visa would not be extended for the next year. I am aware that if I remain here on a NON-O for 3 consecutive years,I would be technically eligible for permanent residence, but with no work,no record of paying taxes, I honestly don't think the authorities would even consider me for permanent residence, not to mention citizenship. If I decide to move my family into Thailand, I must be sure that I would be able to hold the citizenship one day, that there will be stability for my family. Thank you very much for your kind opinions once again.

i'm not a teacher and can't tell you for sure the answer. hopefully one of the teachers reading this forum can give you the exact requirements/details for teaching here in thailand.

your decision to move your family and live here is of course up to you. your username suggests you want to.

Pretty sure an associates degree isn't thought of as a 'proper' degree. Out of BKK not a massive problem, inside it probably won't be enough to get you a teachers licence and thus work permit. It's also harder (compared to Westerners) for Indians to get teaching work here....good luck though.

Let me know if you'd like any further info!

After three consecutive annual extensions you are only eligible to apply for PR. Why not have a chat to the Thai staff at the Thai Embassy or Consulate in India. It may be that you get more accurate information as regards your nationality. As you appreciate, here we have to generalize. If you comply with income and/or banking rules, I doubt very much that a man with a Thai wife and child is going to run foul of Thai Immigration.
