Muslim garment development project pushes up Southerners’ income

BANGKOK, 12 September 2015 (NNT) – Thailand Textile Institute (THTI) has announced the success in its Muslim garment development project for the five Southern border provinces, saying that the project has boosted both the income and the unity among the members.

According to Thailand Textile Institute Director Suttinee Poopaka, the institute has succeeded in developing Muslim clothes for commercial purposes by inviting Malaysian and Indonesian designers to create new products together with Thai fashion gurus.

Funded by the Ministry of Industry, the project has given its members, consisting of local people from different handicraft groups in Southern border provinces, access to technology transfer, which has led to a number of distinctive textile products and quality improvement in the new generation of Muslim garments.

Mrs. Suttinee also disclosed that the assessment report found that the project had forged ties among its members, as the institute’s training gave them the opportunity to create new products together. The growing popularity of their goods in the ASEAN market has also pushed up their income by 15-20 percent.
