BANGKOK: -- PRIME MINISTER General Prayut Chan-o-cha will for the first time attend the UN General Assembly in New York later this month to explain Thailand's sustainable development plan as well as His Majesty the King's sufficiency economy philosophy.

Maj-General Werachon Sukhondhapatipak, the government's deputy spokesman, said Prayut was ready to brief UN delegates on the current political situation here, if asked.

The trip will take place on September 23 until October 1.

"The premier's attendance at the upcoming UN forum will allow officials from other countries to get to know him and the internal situation better as they may have only learned about him through the media only. This meeting will provide an opportunity for discussions and talks in order to know the Thai leader more," Werachon said.

The foreign community in Thailand, most of them from the West, has criticised Prayut for leading the coup that ousted Yingluck Shinawatra last year. The criticism increased when he took over as prime minister in August and filled the Cabinet with military friends.

Former foreign minister General Tanasak Patimapagorn attended last year's UN General Assembly on Prayut's behalf.

This year, the UN General Assembly will be held under the theme of "The United Nations at 70: the road ahead for peace, security and human rights."

Werachon said this year is a very special year because the UN is celebrating its 70th anniversary. The member states will use the forum to speak about their countries' progress and cooperation in the past 15 years as well as how that cooperation will move forward in the next 15 years.

In his ten-minute speech, Prayut will inform the audience about His Majesty the King's sufficiency economy philosophy, which helped Thailand to overcome many crises in the past.

"The prime minister will also talk about Thailand's cooperation with the UN and what it has learned from the organisation. He believes all problems in the world are caused by disparity, poverty and inequality," the spokesman said.

These problems can be solved in two ways, Prayut will say - development is the key to reducing disparity, poverty and inequality, while the use of force is necessary in areas where there is violence in order to restore peace and bring about development.

Books about Thailand's experience in following the monarch's philosophy will also be distributed to the delegates, Werachon said, adding that an exhibition on the issue will also be held. In the past, many world leaders have shown an interest in the issue and wanted to get a better understanding before using it in their countries.

Prayut will also address his government's ongoing implementation of measures to eradicate social disparity, as well as its water management efforts and commitment to public participation by emphasising increasing women's roles.

"The prime minister will also focus on sustainable development, leaving no country behind," Werachon said.

Prayut will also meet with UN chief Ban Ki-Moon, he said.

He will focus on meeting representatives from countries he has not had the opportunity to meet, such as those from Latin American nations like Brazil, Caribbean nations, a few European countries as well as international organisations.

Werachon said Prayut is ready to explain the current situation in Thailand to anyone who asks. However, it is believed that many countries have overlooked the matter.

"Some countries did not support us, but they understand that what the government is doing is about future cooperation. In Asean, we are going toward the Asean Economic Community and many countries realise Thailand's important role due to the geographical advantage of being in the centre."

Thailand's policy is not to focus on the competition to walk alone but to help other Asean countries to walk together.

The international media are not as compliant as the local version and he's not playing at home so if he throws a tantrum etc they'll shred him.

Every time he opens his mouth about the 'outside world', its as though he's never travelled outside of Asia

Sure he will be the "Center of Attraction", spouting his mantra and threatening Attitude Adjustment for those who have a different opinion.

What's the big deal? Thailand is the centre of the universe so shouldn't the un be coming here?

I like the guy for what he's trying to do, but on the world stage and in diplomatic circles, I rather think he should consider the old adage, "Better to keep quiet and be thought a fool, than to speak and confirm it".

It take years of experience (and particular learning) to become a top-level diplomat. You just don't have it, General.

This could get interesting or it could be a fizzer?

Those in the UN that are interested in Thailand and it's political landscape as well as it's future will already have a reasonable idea of what is going on and know just how the junta's treats those that criticize the junta.

Not to sure on the PM's grasp of English but I would think he will have interpreter's that are well briefed on approved answers to questions that could come up there for limiting any possibility of uncle too from looing his biscuit at questions asked.

He's going there to teach, not to learn.

Don't worry Un-elected Prime Minister Prayut- O, the world does know you and they, including the UN , wish you would disappear, any one who takes over an elected Government ( regardless of the situation ) at the point of a gun and under your dubious motives, will get a cordial but cold welcome and a big welcome General to the real world.

It will be portrayed in the Thai media, the only one that counts, as a resounding success, or if he is really given a hard time, it will be reported that he was 'Satisfied with the response to his speech'. The Thai elite don't care what anyone else thinks unless it is to their advantage.

It's a bit sad that he could not find anything more up-to-date and worthwhile to talk about than this concept conceived in the '70s. I mean to say: it sure is a great concept which is still valid, but in 40 odd years did nobody in Thailand come up with anything they can be equally proud of? Anything???
