Israel police clash with Palestinians at Jerusalem holy site

JERUSALEM (AP) — Israeli police briefly clashed with Palestinian protesters at Jerusalem's most sensitive holy site early Sunday, raising tensions in the holy city ahead of the Jewish New Year.

Police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said forces moved into the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound at around 7 a.m. Sunday after police received reports that protesters were planning to disrupt visits to the area by Jewish worshippers and tourists.

He said the protesters barricaded themselves inside the mosque and threw rocks and firecrackers at police. He said police did not enter the mosque, but removed barricades around the building. Suspected pipe bombs were found at the entrance to the mosque, police spokeswoman Luba Samri said.

Police released video showing lit firecrackers and other objects thrown by Palestinians inside the mosque at the officers on the outside with some firecrackers exploding within the holy site.

There were no reports of arrests or injuries. The site was closed for three hours during the standoff but then re-opened for visitors.

Local video footage shows a Jewish man wearing a traditional prayer shawl attacked as he passed through an alleyway close by in the old city. It shows attackers throwing water bottles at him and then tripping him up and kicking him. Police said Muslim women protesting nearby had thrown objects at him and then "passing Arabs" beat him.

The hilltop compound is revered by Jews as the Temple Mount, site of the two biblical Jewish temples.

Muslims call the site the Noble Sanctuary and revere it as the spot where they believe their Prophet Muhammad ascended to heaven.

The site is a frequent flashpoint of violence. Since Israel captured east Jerusalem from Jordan in 1967, Jewish worshippers have been allowed to visit — but not pray — at the site. The area is administered by Muslim authorities and is under Jordanian custody. Muslim authorities view the presence of Jewish worshippers and Israeli police as a provocation and accuse Jewish extremists of plotting to take over the site.

Abdelazem Salhab, an official with the Waqf, the Islamic body that runs the site, accused police of causing "wide damage" inside the mosque. "They crashed many windows and damaged many carpets," he said.

"Jews have no rights in the mosque and its courtyard," he said. "The role of Israeli authorities as the occupying power is protecting this site from non-Muslims who plan to take it over, not helping them."

Police said they did not enter the site, and that any damage was caused by fireworks ignited by Palestinian protesters inside.

Video later released by police showed Ahmed Tibi, an Arab lawmaker in Israel's parliament, yelling at officers and calling their presence "a provocation."

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Israel is committed to preserving the compound's status quo, but would not tolerate violence at the holy site.

"It is our duty and our right to act against law breakers to enable freedom of worship at this holy site. We will act assertively against those throwing rocks, firebombs, pipe bombs or any other device," he said.

In neighboring Jordan, government spokesman Mohammad Momani called on Israel to end its "provocative acts."

Their mosque is built on the site of the Jewish temple which is 2033 years old - that 500 years BEFORE Islam - so who is occupying who?

Such provocation began the Infitada many years ago.

It was pipe bombs hidden by Palestinian terrorists destined for Temple Mount that caused Israeli intervention. This was premeditated violence by the Palestinians and the fact it flared up on the Jewish New Year's Eve is not a coincidence.

You do realize UG is quoting from the OP.

If you have problems with what the OP says, find something to refute it.

If you can't do that, I suggest you stop reading the Associated Press.

Such provocation began the Infitada many years ago.

The police showing up is only a response to Muslim Arabs already provoked. The intifada began in the late 1970s after the first settlements in the West Bank were established, such as Elon Moreh. There has been no peace "looming" since Menahem Begin was elected Prime Minister in 1977. There was a slight glimmer of hope when Israel pulled out of Gaza and forcibly evacuated its settlements around Gaza. But there was really no substantial Palestinian response to that move. Both sides have made bone-headed moves, such as the recent decision to allow Orthodox Jews to pray on the Temple Mount during the holiday, that tend to squash any movements towards a peace or a settlement. But hope for a settlement may have always been but wishful thinking as most Arabs have always called for the destruction of Israel and death to the Jews. To support the Palestinians is to support, perhaps naively, that same agenda.

Again, in my view both sides are in the wrong and I do not have an answer acceptable to anyone. But pick a side, and I then think you are in the wrong too.

"Every time there is not peace looming" (which represents nearly all the time), [muslims] "show up and provoke the [Jews]. Every... Single... Time"!

Such provocation began 1,400 years of oppressive policies toward "people of the book" and the "descendants of apes and pigs."

You may or may not have a valid point buried in your post- [that Israeli police provoked a clash to thwart peace]; it is unlikely IMO. But presented as it is, the post is woefully lopsided.

You're exactly right. The Israeli savages seemingly have an insatiable appetite for violence and bloodshed.

And it is the vitriolic rhetoric such as what you use that, rather justifiably even if not correct, causes people to assume you are nothing more than the typical anti-Semite encountered for centuries.

Here is a religion of peace activist resting in the control center (Mosque) obviously resting his throwing arm. Religious buildings used as a cover for violent activity should be entered at will by the security services and should the problem persist they should be bulldozed.

Yes what a huge argument. The white house has been built where an aboriginal had his tent with his family, we should ask Americans to look to live the country? It's non sense.

Indeed - who is occupying whom?

It's a circular argument that could go on forever.

You obviously haven't been reading his posts. Johpa is one of the mellowest posters on the forum and does not place all the blame on either side. He is a VERY intelligent guy, but way too far left for my tastes.

If you had read my earlier post I noted that I was in disagreement with, and was critical of, the Israeli government over their allowing Israeli Jews to enter the Temple Mount area for the purpose of prayer. I would think that my opinion is actually shared by poster Sinclair and perhaps yourself. My criticism of his rhetoric could/should in no way be perceived as a "violent personal attack" and I even noted that the conclusion may be inaccurate. So perhaps you could kindly elaborate on how you came about to parse my comment regarding the use of caustic language not only as "violent" but as lacking in argumentative substance. And, I daresay, you have absolutely no ground to stand upon questioning my ethics here.

What was it specifically about the post that struck you as anti-semitic? Was it the word "savages"? You might have noticed that I was not the first poster to use the word on this thread.

Was it the phrase, "insatiable appetite for violence and bloodshed"? The UN said that Israel killed nearly 500 Palestinian children and 250 Palestinian women last year. There are videos on youtube which show Israelis cheering the carnage. And is there any doubt that they're going to do it again soon? So how else could one reasonably describe it other than "an insatiable appetite for violence and bloodshed".

Why yes indeedy, it is your use of "savages" and "insatiable appetite for violence and bloodshed" because that fails to accurately describe either Israelis or Palestinians. Such caustic language has long been the hallmark of antisemitism as well as countless other racist flavors. And there are videos showing elements of both sides of the equation cheering acts of violence. Yet having lived a substantial time in the Middle East, I know that the majority on both sides are neither savages nor bloodthirsty.

As I have said here many times, I have no answers to the conflict. Both sides are often in the wrong. Pick a side and then you are wrong too. So methinks you are in the wrong here. Unless of course you would like to offer a solution to the conundrum that might have a chance at succeeding.

It matters not a whit to me what you've determined "has long been a hallmark". However, last year's wholesale slaughter of 750 innocent women and children does, and it should be accurately labeled for what it is: the act of savages.

And the first step towards a peaceful solution would be for the Israelis to elect a government that is interested in a peaceful solution.

Yes, indeedy.

Yes, indeedy.

I have long been a critic of the Likud party position, especially the Likud position on settlements, since Menachem Begin was elected back in the late 1970s, the true beginning of the Intifada, where I had a front row seat. So we are in absolute agreement that a first step on the Israeli side would be electing an alternative government. That would be a step in a better direction, but not a plan for a solution of the conundrum.

And branding an act as savage is quite different from branding a people as savages, which is what you just did once again. Your caustic language, an ad hominen attack writ large, is but one sign that underneath it all, deep underneath all the critical issues that we do agree upon, there remains that unrecognized meme of antisemitism that just doesn't seem to want to disappear within the western psyche.

500 innocent children were slaughtered by Israel last year, so I have little to no interest in either semantic arguments or tired accusations of anti-semitism. Some will certainly find such distractions to be useful, but the rest of the world has had enough of the slaughter and attempts at stifling public outrage and open debate.

Now then, I would like to propose that we get back to the specific topic of this thread.

There are reports that Israeli police beat Palestinian women with clubs at the al-Aqsa mosque.

I wonder when the ever biased MSM will care to mention the stockpile of pipe bombs found at the Al-Aqsa.

P.S the U.N is not a credible arbiter of anything where Israel is concerned. I can easily de-bunk the lie about Israel supposedly killing 500 children, but to do so would be as off topic as the allegation.
