What a surprise.

After last months fiasco over late pension payments and several promises of trust me, everything will be fine, your payment will be in the bank on time................................

It isn't.

I was due a payment in my bank last Friday, but it wasn't there as normal for the last 6 years so surely it will be there today, 2 days late as usual.

No it isn't.

I will look again tomorrow and if it isn't there I will call KBank to see if they have seen it (they hadn't last time) and if they haven't seen it is back on the phone to the DWP.

In my 50 years of engineering if there was one thing I was taught it was this,

"If it works, then don't screw about with it".

As true in 1960 as it is today.

Sorry to hear this bill but I understood the letter to mean you/we will be paid 14 days after the payment went in last month. Quote from the letter below.

"Unfortunately the first payment using a SWIFT/BIC code will take longer to appear in your account.

It will take about 6 days longer than you would normally be expecting it.

After this first delay, your payments will start showing in your account every 4 weeks"

In my case I will not receive 10 days payment, not at least till we are no longer members of the planet earth.

Actually you will not lose any money at all.

Whooppeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

My pension turned up this morning by 09.15 so apart from the delay last month when we did get a delayed payment in full, this month the pension is back to the normal payday in the UK, but just 1 day later than usual appearing in the bank and paid in full.

Will keep an eye out for mine. Thanks for update.

Admire the positive outlook, I would have found sitting waiting for 10 days a bit of a pain. Just hoping that by this time it is all behind us.

For any UK pensioner needing to renew their passport in the next 6 months, you wish to use the DWP letter as evidence of address.

My payment came in today--just one day later than normal. Thai Military Bank by the way has a very good online account system

I rang Overseas Pensions the other day and had a"senior moment ' in answering the "security" questions

The lady gave me a brief second chance and then concluded the session by saying that the the line was very bad and would i please call back--which I didn't--just waited for the payment to come.

FWIW I just received a letter from the US Social Security Pension folks who tell me that they have now amended their records to reflect my new bank account number. It seems that HSBC UK has now dropped the leading 0 that appears before the account number (?!?!) and that this is part of a global change in the state pensions/SSc pensions/banking arena, much more than that I have no idea.

This is when my payments went into my Thai bank acc:-

11th Aug. 17th Sept 9th Oct

Should have gone in on the:-

11th Aug 7th Sept 5th Oct

So looking at those figures I guess I have lost 4 days, so not as bad as it could have been.

Thanks for all the imput and replies.

HSBC account numbers in the UK have never had a leading zero, straight 8 digit number and mine starts with a 5.

The exchange rate is about 54.9 today, so if one gets uk government pension, paid monthly, what do you actualy get, transfered to a thai bank.

Can it be paid yearly and would it make any difference????

Here's what they wrote:

"I checked your records and it shows that the SSA office in the UK took action to update your banking information on 09/22/2015. In the previous payments, your account number had a “0” before the account then the UK office changed it by removing the “0” and placing it at the end of the account.

This action done automatically generated the letter you just received".

I believe the extra zero has something to do with conformity of the field length between US, UK and others.

Nothing in there to suggest that HSBC changed anything, looks like the way it was set up with SSA, whatever that is.

In the UK the IBAN format is 22 characters and the last 14 digits have always been 6 for the sort code and 8 for the account. number. Maybe the US is going to take IBAN on board.

Possibly, dunno. SSA is the US Social Security Administration.

I get the exchange rate from KBank at the time and day that my money gets into the account. Sometimes a few satang up or down. Different banks have slightly different rates,

Now as to your pension being paid once a year. Nobody can predict the exchange rates of any currency against another very well even a month ahead and as for a year?

If you had transferred a years worth of pension in April 2015 the forex was around 44 THB/GBP, last month it was over 55.5 THB/GBP. Look at a years worth of your pension and look at the difference.

My HSBC account number is 8 digits long and certainly does have a leading zero. perhaps it's because I've had the same account for over 40 years. (It was The Midland Bank back then)

The leading zero is coincidental although many 'smaller' banks had 2 leading zeros.

Midland had a sequential range of numbering of accounts with each branch allocated a range of numbers (in an account register) to allocate to customers. HSBC retained that system but latterly the account numbering was controlled centrally.

Generally, the lower the account number, the older the account ie 10387789 would have been open a lot longer than 01145762

An annual payment could be circa GBP 7,000 and at that figure a bank (or FX company) could be prepared to offer you a forward rate which would eliminate any risk (of loss or gain) it would fix what would otherwise be an uncertain currency amount,

That is not a leading zero. The HSBC format is 8 digits and zero is valid digit. In software when the field length is greater than the data then it may be necessary to apply leading or trailing zeros to ensure that the field is fully populated.

Mine starts with a 5 and was also a Midland account.

The DWP do not do annual payments. it is 4 or 13 weeks.

But, ........ if managing your exchange rate risk was the MAJOR factor you could accumulate your 4 quarterly payments and you could take out a forward contract if you believed the rate was favourable.

Today Monday 12th October 2015, my pension is late for the third time in three consecutive months. It should be paid on a Thursday every four weeks. I've read most of the above and it seems to me that a few of us are having the same problem.

Well, naturally I've contacted Newcastle today at 2PM Thai time and my money ran out before I could get any answer as to what day my pension will arrive. That's the second time my money's ran out.

I've contacted the British Embassy, and they say they can't help.

I've sent an e.mail to 10 Downing Street and got a reply saying that they've sent my e.mail to the relevant department, without actually telling me the name of that department. In other words I can assume that it's gone up to Newcastle, so I've landed back in the same place

I've sent an e.mail to Newcastle, and they say they'll get back to me within about 10 working days, I think they said ten, might be wrong about that.

Anyway in desperation I've sent an e.mail to the BBC and told them that there's a few of us all got delayed payments, with no new due date.

I want to know when the bloody thing's going to arrive. I don't need to know anything else really, although they've told me they've sent it on the 30th Sept and it should be in my account here on the 8th Oct.

So after three months, I've never got any definite date of when the payment will arrive.

So now I intend to contact various politicians in the UK and explain the problem. At the same time I'll try to find out how we can have more say on our pensions and maybe see if we can get them index linked. I've two young children here, and I'm relying a great deal on this money coming from the UK on time. How can anyone plan anything when they don't know when their pension will actually arrive ? I'm stating the obvious I know

I'd be very interested to know exactly how many members here have had the same late payment problem as myself. So do please let me know. King regards

PS, Does anyone know how to make cheap phone calls to the UK, my phone card keep running out after a few minutes. Thank you in advance

While your emailing them, complain on my behalf regarding the lack of jobs in the engineering industry, the cost of beer in wetherspoons, the price of a daily bus ticket, the problems of immigration, cost of electricity, gas and other utilities and finally the fact that the country is a bag of nails.

Late Pension Payments

Just got of the phone with the Department of Work and Pensions. The delay in the payments is due to the Thai Government insisting that all pensions paid into the Banks in Thailand are now paid in by using a Swift and Iban code thus causing a delay in the process of the money showing in the Banks by 2-3 days. The guy in Work & Pensions did say they were looking at getting the payments out earlier to try to stop any delay's. For once not the UK's fault, Thai Govenment Paranoia about money laundering I expect

You need to ring Overseas Pensions { 44] 01912187777. You will then wait till a relevant number--I think its 3. they ask

press the approptiate number I think its 3 to speak to the right person. They will ask you security questions--have your national insurance number ready.
