Pheu Thai and UDD will not join steering committee

BANGKOK: -- The Pheu Thai party will not send any representatives to join the government’s steering committee and any members who join at their own discretion should leave the party, announced the acting party leader Pol Lt-Gen Viroj Pao-in.

In a statement issued on Friday, Pol Lt-Gen Viroj said the party felt that it was difficult, under the present circumstances, to send any representatives to work with other political groups because the authority to make such decision rests with the executive board which could not hold a meeting due to the ban imposed by the National Council for Peace and Order.

However, he said that any party members who wanted to join the steering committee, they could do so at their own discretion which would be against the party’s will and, hence, they should leave the party.

Meanwhile, United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship Jatuporn Promphan announced that the UDD would not join the steering committee. He also urged the Pheu Thai party to clearly announce that it would not send any members or relatives of the members to join otherwise the UDD would part way with the party.

Jatuporn said that it didn’t matter who would head the new Constitution Drafting Committee as the new draft charter will not different much from the one which was voted down by the now defunct National Reform Council.

What really matters is what the powers-that-be really want, he said.

"...........otherwise the UDD would part way with the party."

You have to give it to Jatuporn, he tells good jokes. Either that, or he thinks the Thai people are as thick as he is.

Always interesting to hear the opinion of the non elected leader of the UDD and former party list PTP MP.

Any news on his appeal coming to court?

So the PM's unrealistic appeal for all parties to join hands and sing "Kumbaya" has been rejected.

I'm not sure these guys are thinking very strategically.

While I agree that there is a principled stance for the opposition, by stating they will not participate, they have added to the PMs narrative, which he can escalate, rhetorically, from a lack of participation, to evidence of ill-intent. More attitude adjustment session needed!

If the opposition agreed to participate, but made that participation contingent on fair play, transparency, and equal access to the press, they have then claimed a higher ground. The PM would then be challenged to accept or reject the conditions, and he would most likely come across relatively poorly.

It is better to be close to your enemy with the cameras rolling, not to be associated with him, but to be holding your nose while standing nearby.

The PM doesn't have to escalate anything, by rhetoric or otherwise. PTP and UDD have shown their ill-intent during PTP's time in office. PTP bribed their way into office with the rice scam, and refused to modify, let alone scrap it, despite its huge costs, lest they lose their grip on power before achieving their prime objective, an amnesty for their fugitive criminal leader, and themselves.

Times have changed. This topic has been alive since 12.54 yesterday and only a handful of replies.

Are posters from both sides of the political fence sick of attacking/defending both the PTP and their army of paid terrorists ?

Too busy playing Facebook, LINE, online games and hanging out with peers, this young generation...... and by chance secretly filming truthful incidents, crimes about minor corruption and put it up on Facebook....

Those overgrown arrogant political kiddies from both parties are so boring with their rint rant, that people just get tired of this S********* and do as I mentioned above....

Its fun at times but not always. Not all topics are good fun. This one clearly shows that the PTP and UDD are also not democratic as they forbid their members to join steering committee. They are just as good / bad as the junta.

I do wonder how fast the funds are drying out for the redshirts and their leaders. They have been out of the government for a while making it real hard for them to get money by corruption like they did before. By having less money they loose a lot of power too. That is part of the reason why the current government wants to postpone the election. The longer they have no money and power the more their influence is breaking down.

quote from the OP

"Meanwhile, United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship Jatuporn Promphan announced that the UDD would not join the steering committee. It seems a little strange to me that Jatuporn and the leadership of the UDD, while claiming to be on the side of "democracy" are all self elected. There has never been a vote in the UDD on who should lead the party that has been voted on by the rank and file of the party.

So you have the position where the un-elected leader of the UDD (which is not a politcal party in its own right) forbidding its membership to do anything to help reconciliation. A leader who is currently on bail from the courts as well.

The PTP are also forbidding any of its members from doing the same thing or they will have to leave the party.

Democracy PTP and UDD style anyone?
