Floods Hit Battambang

PHNOM PENH (Khmer Times) – Six districts in Battambang province are dealing with heavy flooding, and 155 households in Bavel district were evacuated this weekend, officials said.

One school in Banan district was flooded and 410 houses in Kamrieng district were damaged by floods. According to the National Police, 70 households in Phnom Prek district were affected by floods. In Ratanak Modul district, the floods destroyed farmers’ crops along the Sangke River and inundated more than 100 households in the provincial capital.

The border crossings at Dourng and O Anluk in Kam Rieng district were shut down on September 18 because the roads were cut off by floods. This made the usual transport of goods between Cambodia and Thailand impossible for the last three days. Police said water at the two border exits was a meter deep. According to Long Phal Kun, president of the department of water resources in Battambang, the floods did not cause heavy damage to the province despite the police reports stating otherwise.
