Defeating ISIL only possible with change of Syrian leader says US President Barack Obama

NEW YORK: -- Countering ISIL and violent terrorism was the title of a gathering of world leaders chaired by US President Barack Obama.

It took place on the sidelines of the United Nations a day after Obama and Russian President Vladimir Putin had addressed the UN General Assembly.

The future of Syrian President Basher al-Assad in the fight against the militant group is the main source of disagreement between Moscow and Washington.

“In Syria, as I said yesterday, defeating ISIL requires – I believe – a new leader, and an inclusive government that unites the Syrian people in the fight against terrorist groups. This is gonna be a complex process, and as I’ve said before, we are prepared to work with all countries including Russia and Iran to find a political mechanism in which it is possible to begin a transition process,” Obama told the summit.

Sixty nations have now joined the coalition against ISIL Obama told the gathering and said that the militant group would eventually lose because it has “nothing to offer but suffering and death”.

Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi agreed with the US president and said the coalition had to counter the militant group’s ideology.

Moscow, with no representatives present said the summit showed “a lack of respect towards the United Nations”.

Mr. Obama...you are such a dreamer. If you think this whole ISIL thing will go away if Assad goes away, you have your head up your a..

Read his comments again. Getting rid of Assad is only part of the plan. He's right, until the people of Syria are united, there's going to be problems. And he believes the only way to do this is to get rid of Assad. He is the #1 problem there right now. Kinda the root cause if you look at the history of the current Syrian civil war.

Obama also said he "believes" getting rid of Assad will help. And he never said ISIL will go away if Assad goes away. He said it was a complex process. And it is...

The Obama is out of his mind he won the Peace Prize cut the Army and now wants to fight Russia and China. The United States Army is very small today and half are women

I am not a supporter of Assad. Not even a little bit. But given the situation, getting rid of Assad could be a huge mistake. If you think the country is a mess, just think of how it will be when you have no gov't at all.

Any pipe-dream of democratic reforms will have to wait for quite sometime.

First there has to be stability and as much as I dislike the idea, I don't think there is anyone in the country that can provide the stability other than Assad and the existing regime. Otherwise, there will be a complete breakdown of gov't systems that will make Iraq look like a model of civility.

Where did Obama say he wants to fight Russia and China? You need to do a bit of research on the makeup of the army. Nowhere near half are women. And even less in front line staff.

Nowadays every country has complex problems.

Assad is a controversial issue for Syrian people to resolve.

Making it look like Assad problem is a key to ISIS is an attempt to achieve US goals in ME using again the coalition of outside forces.

USA didn't learn anything from Afghanistan, Iran, Iraq, Libya etc. They (USA Gov't) pretend to be stupid.

Putin has made a few valid points in UN:

- Al-Gaeda is a problem created by US.

- ISIS is a problem created by US.

- All Arab Spring and problems it brought is US creation.

- US policy in ME is aimed at destabilization of the region.

- The same result is achieved in Ukraine.

- Next step in the same process is coming in Europe.

- Within 2 years we will see similar events in Middle Asia.

At the moment the only cohesive force in Syria is Assad. Is he good or bad - depends on our point of view.

Our point of view can not, must not support or remove him. Let Syrians decide this after removing ISIS.

Export of social unrest by former USSR and by USA today have different banners. One was "Communist" the other is "Democratic".

But the result is everywhere the same - social unrest, destabilization, power vacuum filled by Radical Islam.

Obama should give back his Peace Nobel Prize.

Indeed, not all the problems in the world.

But the problems in Iraq? Yes - I think we can blame the US squarely for that. ISIS would not have gotten a foothold in an Iraq lead by Saddam. How about Libya? US was instrument in the removal of Gadaffi & now that country has fallen apart.

Similarly in Syria - under what authority does the US have to unilaterally decide the leadership there?

The US is not making the world a better place, it is making it less stable.

I look forward to the Putin's involvement and the peace which transcends all peace soon befalling Syria.

Perhaps we can call Merkel & Co. and tell her that the refugees don't need to unpack their bags, they will be going back shortly.

Iraq for sure. Not so sure about Libya. They got caught up in the Arab Spring uprisings.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arab_Spring

The Arab Spring (Arabic: الربيع العربي‎, ar-rabīˁ al-ˁarabī) was a revolutionary wave of demonstrations and protests (both non-violent and violent), riots, and civil wars in the Arab world that began on 18 December 2010 in Tunisia with the Tunisian Revolution, and spread throughout the countries of the Arab League and its surroundings. While the wave of initial revolutions and protests faded by mid-2012, some started to refer to the succeeding and still ongoing large-scale discourse conflicts in the Middle East and North Africa as the Arab Winter. The most radical discourse from Arab Spring into the still ongoing civil wars took place in Syria as early as the second half of 2011.

By the end of February 2012, rulers had been forced from power in Tunisia,[1]Egypt,[2]Libya,[3] and Yemen;[4] civil uprisings had erupted in Bahrain[5] and Syria;[6] major protests had broken out in Algeria,[7]Iraq,[8]Jordan,[9]Kuwait,[10]Morocco,[11] and Sudan;[12] and minor protests had occurred in Mauritania,[13]Oman,[14]Saudi Arabia,[15]Djibouti,[16]Western Sahara,[17] and Palestine. Weapons and Tuareg fighters returning from the Libyan Civil War stoked a simmering conflict in Mali which has been described as "fallout" from the Arab Spring in North Africa.[18]

The protests shared some techniques of civil resistance in sustained campaigns involving strikes, demonstrations, marches, and rallies, as well as the effective use of social media[19][20] to organize, communicate, and raise awareness in the face of state attempts at repression and Internet censorship, most notably used by the youth members of the Arab population.[21][22]

Again, not so sure you can blame the US for these uprisings. Perhaps blame the dictators who abused and repressed their citizens? Like Gadaffi and Assad?

I wish it would be so easy.

Islamization of Europe had taken about 40 to 50 years as a peaceful process resulting in shortsighted policy of PC Liberals.

You can count at minimum the same time of a process immersed in blood - and I'm not sure it will succeed. Pandora's box once opened ...

Why should the POTUS decide who can and who cannot govern another country?

Should that decision be for the Syrian people to decide. Was Assad democratically elected? Did Obama choose to fund and equip rebels against a democratically elected government?

America backs those who follow their instructions and support American interests. Nothing to do with democracy, justice or any other noble sentiment.

The positioning of power brokers...vying for the superior position in Syria should be very interesting...

Obama had his chance...balked and decided to do token "pin-point" air strikes against ISIL...

Now comes Russia...taking the lead...bring in ams, equipment and men...and guess what...Obama cries foul!

Russia...(this is hilarious)...extended an invitation to the US to join the coalition of nations they are gathering together to fight ISIL as a concerted multi-nation push back against ISIL...(This is normally a US Presidential role)

So now...the US...the world's self appointed world leader...is relegated to a minor role in the fight against ISIL with Russia taking the lead and insisting they will protect the current Syrian leader...which the US is insisting that he be removed...

Obama will blink again...he is expert in the diplomacy of blink...

Syria is not a democracy. The citizens have no option to elect their leadership. These protests started out of their dislike for Assad. He fought back hard.

Russia's intentions are not altruistic. Far from it. Funny how some balk at anything the US does, yet say it's OK for Russia to do the same...or worse. Russia has been a big part of this problem for a long time.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Russia%E2%80%93Syria_relations

Dmitri Trenin reports in the New York Times that from 2000 to 2010 Russia sold around $1.5 billion worth of arms to Syria, making Damascus Moscow’s seventh-largest client.[11]

Where do you find this stuff or come up with it? Jeez this whole thing got rolling as a result of "Arab Spring" and ole Julian's WikiLeaks .. .Obama and the CIA have sent the last3 years debating if they should aid anyone in the Civil War. With the rise of the IS it became apparent why the there we grave doubts about aiding the anti assad forces, however no one but Russia is sprinting to help Mr Humanitarian ... Assad .

How this is magically morphed into the US vs Russia and China speaks more to the fanciful conspiracy theories dancing in euro brainpans than anything real or substantive.

Put the Leo down and join the real world.

That mantra is all but worn out. Considering Obama is a student from the Saul Alinsky school, he should know these point:

  • “A tactic that drags on too long becomes a drag.” Don’t become old news.
  • “Keep the pressure on. Never let up.” Keep trying new things to keep the opposition off balance. As the opposition masters one approach, hit them from the flank with something new.

Barry should be concentrating on the latter, not the former.

Case you missed it ... there is like this refugee crisis thing-y going on in Euro land, and those sometimes allies of the US want Obama to lead a meeting about this subject which is what he is doing. This is likely the one thing the US wants if their support is to be obtained.

However you can best believe that the US is not going to be leading the way, as it is NOT a US problem

Mr OBAMA is always disconnected from the reality on Syria.

He wants to please the Sunni kingdoms by eliminating the Shiite leader of Syria.

Every American "adventure" since the end of WWII has ended in disaster!

Removing Assad will not solve anything as is evidenced by the wonderful American mandated democracies which now exist in Afghanistan, Iraq , Libya.............

If Assad is removed more space and freedom will be given to the Jihadis who will continue the Shia/Sunni war whilst ensuring the total eradication of Christians and others who are "unbelievers".

Mr Obama and other Western leaders should be giving consideration to homeland threats posed by mass migration of fit, healthy , young, male "refugees".

The violence has begun in Germany.

Nation building is a tough thing to do. It's worked a few times, specifically after WW2. But not really since then. Perhaps Panama is a good example. A bit better now after the removal of the PM...errr...drug kingpin. But still not great.

The middle east is a massive mess created by centuries of foreign influence.
