I would say normal, all trees lose their leaves at some point, during the year, usually not all at once on most trees in the tropics.....

A bit more info would be helpful, perhaps .... all the leaves or just some?wink.png

Any chance you can post a picture or two, perhaps over the next couple of days?

I did ask a knowledgeable Thai about this, he thought it was normal ... new leaves will (should come!) back.... over next few weeks....

The only other thing I could think may cause a problem is that soil has been placed above the normal area where trunk and roots meet the soil.... seen that a few times (duh!) facepalm.gif But assuming it is an established tree.... but without anything other than rain happening to it....?

SJ is right on: It is normal for inside, underneath, older leaves to shed as new growth occurs at the branch tips. But if the newest growth is dying and dropping leaves, and if a large percentage of the foliar crown is affected, then you may have a problem.

Look to soil and water management, pest and disease issues, possible girdling roots below soil grade, herbicide damage, fertilizer burn, root damage, site disturbance like grading or excavation, many possibilities for an individual tree to decline, even when others on the property are thriving. But the key would be to observe other jackfruit trees on your property or nearby; are they doing the same thing?

If you can figure out how to post some photos, take some with the whole tree and surrounding site, as well as close ups of the foliage and twigs just below the leaves, scaffold branches and tree trunk.
