Communities along Chao Phraya warned of surging water level

CHAI NAT, 16 October 2015 (NNT) – A warning has been issued to residents living along the Chao Phraya River in seven provinces as the water level is likely to rise due to recent rainfalls.

The Regional Irrigation Office 12 in Chai Nat province has encouraged people whose residences or businesses are situated on the banks of the Chao Phraya River to closely monitor the water level during this period. The swelling of the river is expected to occur in seven provinces, namely Uthai Thani, Chai Nat, Sing Buri, Ang Thong, Suphan Buri, Ayutthaya and Lop Buri.

The Office explained that the phenomenon is caused by recent downpours in the upper parts of Thailand. The accumulated rainwater has been flowing into the Chao Phraya River, leading to a continuous rise in the water level. As of today, the amount of water passing through Chao Phraya Dam was recorded at 726 cubic meters per second. The rate could reach up to 900 cubic meters per second in the near term.

Authorities at the Regional Irrigation Office 12 are planning to divert excess water into irrigated lands on both sides of the river in a bid to alleviate the problem. Should the amount of water released from Chao Phraya Dam be increased from 900 cubic meters per second due to the arrival of more rain, residents of riverside communities would be notified in advance.
