EC wants to keep power to issue yellow, red and orange cards to election cheaters

BANGKOK: -- The Election Commission wants to retain its power to issue yellow, red and orange cards for election violators, to supervise, manage and stage elections, to transfer or discipline officials and its term in office is seven years.

The EC’s five-point wish list was presented to the Constitution Drafting Committee on Thursday by EC chairman Supachai Somcharoen who was invited by CDC chairman Meechai Ruchupan to share the EC’s views on how the draft charter should be crafted.

Mr Supachai said the EC should be authorized to stage elections and to order the transfer or to penalize officials deemed to be an obstacle to the elections or being biased in favour of certain parties or candidates.

Electronic voting should be introduced to save costs and to facilitate the voting by voters, said Mr Supachai, adding that the ballots should be counted at the polling units except when it is necessary to count the ballots elsewhere.

In case of election cheatings, he said the EC should have the power to issue yellow, orange or red cards to the election violators.

The EC’s term in office should be seven years and provisions about the selection of EC members as stipulated in 2007 charter should be applied in the selection of EC members.

Like a bizarro football game! giggle.gif

Here's a radical idea, if someone cheats they're out and no colour coding.

Unfortunately that doesn't fit into Thainess where backdoor escape routes must exist to placate the powerful and help them just in case their time comes sometime in the future.

democracy, wrong doers get too many chances,if they are influential and rich, the poor

are never given a chance.

True, plus the EC doesn't have a very good track record in the past. I wonder if the EC needs to be re-engineered, or whether there should be a process whereby each 'case' goes to an aligned court for decision.

Plus, there needs to be much clearer definitions of what is / what is not vote buying etc.

Plus, one transgression and barred from politics for life.

More serious transgressions go to jail minimum 10 years with very large fine and shamed in newspapers, on TV etc., and with concise but easy to understand explanation of why they are being punished.

Maybe also us facebook or similar to ensure the message gets to the younger folks.

And they mailed a letter to Santa Claus asking for a pony.

Your idea/suggestion would bring great change to Lack of Sanctions (LOL). Unfortunately no Thai is listening and we all "preach to the choir." Thais NEED corruption and embrace Co-Dependent behavior.

This is so hypocritically laughable considering how the current government came to power.

No, it isn't hypocritical nor laughable, as this is about how previous 'elected' governments came to power, so-called, just so-called, 'democratically', and attempt not to repeat the 'mistakes' of the past in the future!
