Opposition Supporters in Banteay Meanchey Defect to CPP

ALMOST 100 opposition Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP) supporters and several dozen members of the Royalist Funcinpec Party in Svay Chek district, Banteay Meanchey province, defected yesterday to the ruling Cambodian People’s Party. Among them were provincial and village-level leaders.

So far this year, at least 1,000 CNRP supporters from Kandal, Kampong Speu, Kampot and Oddar Meanchey provinces have defected to the ruling party, including former opposition lawmaker Van Sam Oeun from Kampot province, citing a lack of confidence in the CNRP’s leadership.

In response, CNRP spokesman Yem Ponhearith said that he heard about the defections from local media sources: “That’s their right to join political activities or support any party in the country.”
