City to begin eviction of Ong Ang canal squatters

BANGKOK: -- A combined force of over a hundred of city police, metropolitan police and soldiers began forced eviction of some 370 squatters illegally trespassed and occupied the Ong Ang city canal for businesses over a decade after giving them to voluntarily move out is still ignored.

The operation to remove and dismantle stalls which had been permanently built was supervised by Bangkok deputy governor Pol Gen Asawin Kwanmuang and watched by hundreds of traders wearing in white T shirts in their bid to seek for another 3-month reprieve.

But before dismantlement order was given, squatters’ representatives gave the deputy governor roses with hope that he would grant them the reprieve.

However the deputy governor insisted that the eviction has to start with no more reprieve as squatters and traders have occupied the canal for businesses over a decade, and now it was time for Bangkok Metropolitan Administration to act in order to improve the scenery of the canal.

He said the eviction will start from stalls located on Bopitpimuk bridge to Damronsathit bridge as preliminary survey showed there was no individual property located there.

But he said he would bring the call for reprieve by squatters and traders to the meeting of the committee in charge of canal regulation for decision making again if it is possible to extend the deadline by three months.

The deadline had ended September 28.

He said that traders are still allowed to do business as usual as eviction will begin in areas where there are no personal property located.

He said if traders cooperate, eviction will take only seven days to finish.

He said the BMA wanted the canal back to enable boat transport as the canal is eight metres wide.

He also said the BMA has prepared other locations for traders to do business which are larger.

The Governor is following a reasonable and calm approach to removal of the encroaching traders. None seem angry nor mistreated.

It's the "small" klong that runs from Phra Pok Klao bridge up to Fort Mahakan where it joins up with the Banglampuh klong which forms the "island" known as Rattanakosin Island where the Grand palace is, according to Wiki
