I remember 4 big bottles for 100 Baht when they launched.

Must have been more than that George when they first launched? I can remember when it was 18 baht (large bottle) and that would have been in 1995/96. It had increased to 20/21 baht a large bottle in 1997 when i moved here.

That was Pattaya prices then, but not sure how much it was 15 years ago.....................wink.png

Are you talking about Chang or Carslberg?

From what I remember Chang only appeared after the bust up with Carlsberg.

Chang was here at the same time as carlsberg I remember 100%

There was some sort of bust up and then carlsberg vanished

I herd it is was something to do with the distribution company

I'm trying to find Red Horse (from San Migel) now... (640ml @ 6% and much more taste), but can only find it in Lotus, and usually only a few bottles available at any one time (probably because it's close to a school!!!

It's available in most Family Marts and in Tops (same owner).

I seem to remember it was just around 30 baht in convenient stores like 7-eleven, in 2001, 14-years ago - I'm not beer drinker, but bought one for a girl, who was very unhappy that it was a "Cheap Charlie beer" instead of a Heineken...blink.png

I am not sure that Chang was around 15 years ago (could be wrong but my first recollection of Chang was about 12 years ago in Chiang Mai, it may have been around in Southern Thailand earlier.

You could buy 4 bottles at our local Mom and Pop store for 100 Baht. It's just gone downhill recently with the decrease in bottle size alcohol content and it's new horrible taste.

Chang was launched in 1995 - the year I arrived in Thailand - according to Wikipedia under ThaiBev

From what I remember Chang only appeared after the bust up with Carlsberg.

At the time Chang was being bottled at the Carlsberg brewery, under Carlsberg supervision (I think). They started producing Chang in 1995

Chang was/is based on Carlsberg Elephant beer, which, interestingly enough, was banned from sale in the UK because the alcohol content was too high (8.4 I believe). One of the only good rules to come out of the EU was that this was deemed as unfair practice and to my knowledge can now be bought legally in the UK................... wink.png

He's talking about a different beer. He's also talking nonsense. The connection with Carlsberg came in 2000 or so, years after Chang appeared on the market.

A bit off topic but no matter what it costs then its like dish water now since they have altered the ABV, stopped drinking it like many others I know, now drinking Tiger.

I would imagine its brewed under licence in the UK not exported from Thailand.

It has been mentioned that Chang is cancer genic by some doctors to their patients here but I assume that's the doctors way of telling people to drink less.

Why would an 8.4% beer be banned when Special Brew was available at 9% from the same company?

Posted

No it was here 15 years ago 100%

It was the first beer I bought

If i remember right the alcohol content wasn't on it then, i herd it wad some where between 5 and 9% depending on the batch, don't know if that is true

My taste buds must be finished because it tast the same to me

Do you think the lower alcohol content is so they can sell it overseas as u can get it in the uk now

You may think it taste the same but I sure don't. The new taste of Chang Classic sucks in my opinion when you compare it with the old formulary mixture. I'm not sure if it was the government that put pressure on the beer manufactures but most definitely I no longer like Chang Classic. When i began drinking Chamg Classic a couple of years back, the large bottle was 640ml and 6.4% alc. Now the new Chang Classic is 620ml and 5.5% alc. I would say that this is fairly significant especially when the price has gone a bit higher than 2 years ago. Yes, the new color of the bottle is considered more attractive but the taste has changed. Now, I'm trying to select another beer because Chang just doesn't do it for me anymore.

Because at the time, Elephant beer was an import beer, Special Brew was brewed in Northampton from the 1950's. There were different rules (1970's)

Need I say what happened next?

Maybe you should just get your facts straight about what came first.

Correct.

One question: can you remember if Amstel came in green or brown bottles? I guess you know that green = upmarket.

Chiang has been with us since 1995.

Haha...Chang was 200 baht all you could drink during happy hour (4-8 pm) in Cathouse in Nana. Well, I wasn't doing that 15 years ago, but I was doing it 10 years ago. Ah, fun times. Tequila shots were 25 baht...including when you bought them for the girls.

Amstel used to come in brown bottles and the other popular beer at the time Kloster used to come in green bottles
