PHUKET: -- Excavation of the Sam Kong Underpass has been delayed by flooding, but the project is still on track for completion by the February 10 deadline, The Phuket News was told today (Oct 27).

Excavation of the tunnel halted on October 17, when the worksite flooded, explained Project Engineer Chalermpon Wongkietkun.

“The tunnel was scheduled for completion by October 31, but heavy rains have caused delays, especially the flooding on October 17,” said Mr Chalermpon.

“We had to suspend work for safety reasons, as we need firm earth underneath the backhoe to ensure it is stable.”

Seems reasonable enough situation as the site drainage is non existent and by suspending operations no lives will be at risk.

Being a mortal and unable to see into the future, I will wait and see if there are any changes.

Habitual liars as they will never complete by 10 Feb. At Central underpass it took several months to do the side & cross roads which they have not even looked at yet apart from being shamed to put a bit of asphalt down. Must admit yesterday did see them actually digging out new earth on the southside.

No.........whoever would have thought that Phuket would have heavy rain and flooding. Never happened before!!

Lack of planning and common sense is the issue here.

Well the French seemed to cope well under somewhat similar condition when constructing the Metro system in time past.As did the English with the first underground railsystem in the world.

The Sam Kong area was always a low-lying swampy local drainage spot, and will continue to be so in the future. All Phuket knows this, so no surprise at the usual excuses and lying.

A parallel with ''swampy then, only on a much smaller and in truth a lot less potentially dangerous too.

Wonder who owned the land the underpass is being constructed in?

Probably not the same family that had great swathes of land in the swampy area.

This entire underpass idea is so so stupid. And the idea that an overpass is 'not beautiful' is the other side of stupidity.

Agreed, and just think with all the money saved on the overpasses vs the underpasses how much could be spent on further infrastructure projects even with the standard 20-30 disappearing into a black hole. Hmmm, more public facilities at all the beaches, ugly electric going underground, more public parks and public riding trails both at the beach and in the hills, more and better paid lifeguards at the beaches and heaven forbid a safe and reliable public transportation mafia be damned.

Not sure what you are on about. The underpass is being constructed on existing public roads. If you are talking about land either side of it I cannot see them increasing in value as there will be less pass by traffic once underpass is complete.
