Guard of honour for Cambodian migrants

BANGKOK: -- A total of 108 undocumented Cambodian workers were rounded up in Sa Kaew province early yesterday morning and delivered to the border, where they were personally welcomed back to Cambodia by Bon Sokvibol, the Cambodian Consulate-General.

In a ceremony in front of the Aranyaprathet District Office, the migrant workers were deported into the arms of Cambodian immigration officials from Poipet, the border town on the Cambodian side of the border.

The Thai authorities orchestrated the elaborate show to express their sincerity about proceeding in accordance with humanitarian principles. They said they wanted to boost confidence ahead of the Asean Economic Community, which both Thailand and Cambodia will find themselves a part of in a few months.

Bon said he was pleased that the Thai officials had dealt with the Cambodian workers in a respectful manner. He also said he would urgently inform other Cambodians who wanted to work in Thailand that they should obtain proper border passes and legally register with the Thai authorities.

I expect they will be back at work on Monday!

Well done!

If we don't treat each other like human biungs...we are not human beings.

"they should obtain proper border passes and legally register with the Thai authorities."

Instead of making such a show deporting the illegal workers back to Cambodia, couldn't the Thai government simply process them internally to stay and work in Thailand?

I never treat anyone like a human biung.

Yes but in that case, wouldn't have had the parade, the photo-op, the congratulations and the news coverage...

Can't miss a parade and a photo-op, can they?

And as mentioned in post before your's, that ops probably ended up with a "See you guys on Monday" :)

The situation in Thailand is obviously different to my country. Thailand wants these low paid immigrant workers, but doesn't want hordes coming in undocumented, knowing that if caught, they can say "Oops, sorry, I forgot", and then register. This seems to be a pretty civilized message, by Thai standards.
