Fake Foreign Lovers, Including ‘David Cameron,’ Scam Women for 29M Baht

BANGKOK — A Thai woman who lost 23 million baht is among victims fleeced by online scammers who posed as foreign lovers, including one said to have used a photograph of British Prime Minister David Cameron.

Pornnapat Chartphuek, administrator of a Facebook page called Thai Anti-Scam, filed a police complaint on behalf of the victims yesterday claiming they had lost a total of 29 million baht to scammers, including one woman who gave 23 million baht to a man posing as a romantic interest online.

“These days, 15-20 victims complained to my page each day,” Pornnapat told police at the Crime Suppression Division. “Most of the scammers are Nigerians. They use Facebook and chat applications to befriend the victims. They used photos of good-looking farangs or foreign politicians, like David Cameron, the British Prime Minister.”

Pornnapat’s Facebook page is dedicated to raising awareness about the scams, reports of which have become increasingly common, among Thai women and taking legal action on behalf of victims.

Am I the only one slightly impressed by anybody who can actually get money out of a Thai?

Most of them seem pained to give you change when you pay with a bigger note

No head and shoulders passport photo, instead, an angled body shot... yet someone still fell for it...

Apparently not gossip and plenty of real evidence, the documented evidence has been given to the Crime Suppression Division.

For that kinda cash I wouldnt scam em......

How did she manage to amass 23m baht and not know that ANY passport is face only ?

First things first, not all Thais have passports so it's illogical to assume that they should know anything much about them particularly the specific requirements the photo has to meet.

Secondly, it's more likely to be a Nigerian that came up with the name, they're trying to scam Thais remember.

Or a window to throw it out of !!, To complete the quote.

I have only been here 12 years, but have never met a Thai Lady with 23M THB, "Guess I have friends in low places" !!

The string of numbers on the bottom of the passport are clearly incorrect having regard to the information contained alongside the photo.

Where do I find the one who parted with B23M?? She sounds like a real sucker, but more likely a real liar. A woman with that sort of money doesn't part with it so easily. Even if she's butt ugly she can get laid for a LOT less.

Are we really and truly expected to believe a Thai woman would simply give away 23 million baht to a total stranger. From where is she from? And what does she do? She certainly is NOT a business woman. This is sensationalism at its finest.

It does happen.

I was asked to convince a woman that her Scottish beau was in fact a scammer. It was all the same. He'd sent a computer, jewelry, and an engagement ring that was being held by Thai customs. All she had to do was pay something like 70,000 baht to clear it. There was even a phone number which was answered by a Thai woman claiming to work for customs.

The woman was royally angry and my wife and me for insisting that her Scottish prince was probably African, given the English used in his emails. In the end, she did not send the money, but it was a close call. And it took her six months before she would talk to my wife again.

This is not right of course but this scam has been going on for years and it happens everywhere. One of the downfalls of social media with conmen praying on the innocent or even vulnerable.

Nothing can be done to get the money back of course, its gone and so are the scammers, although 23 million baht is a lot of money how much would the Thai police invest in doing and International investigation? i suspect nothing at all.

Also, what about the people who are fraudulently scammed out of their money here in Thailand? There are many stories, these would be easier to resolve and yet nothing ever happens.

In short, dont hold your breath, the RTP are about as useful as a carpet fitters ladder.

If its true a thai women send 23 million bath to some one she not know she is one of the most stupid thai women: i learned in Thailand it's just the opposite way: stupid western guys are ripped of by Thai women (please don't name them LADIES!!!!!!!!!!!)
