Sokha still in crosshairs

Featured Replies

The National Assembly is preparing to discuss the “people’s proposal” to oust Cambodia National Rescue Party deputy leader Kem Sokha from his position as the assembly’s vice president, a ruling party lawmaker said yesterday.

Cambodian People’s Party lawmaker and parliamentary spokesman Chheang Vun said that Monday’s pro-CPP protest against Sokha, which ended in two CNRP lawmakers being severely beaten, was just the latest of “many” requests to oust the CNRP leader from the position, which the assembly was obliged to consider.

“The members of parliament can vote for [Kem Sokha] to hold any position, the members of parliament can also vote to take that position back,” Chheang Vun said, declining to specify when the issue might be debated.

Khmer Power Party targets Sokha, PM
Fri, 30 October 2015

The fledgling Khmer Power Party has backed calls for Cambodia National Rescue Party deputy leader Kem Sokha to resign as the National Assembly’s deputy president.

KPP president Sourn Serey Ratha, whose party’s progenitor was once dubbed a terrorist organisation by the government, said it didn’t matter that the protests against Sokha on Monday that ended in two CNRP lawmakers being savagely beaten were organised by pro-CPP groups and promoted by Prime Minister Hun Sen the day before.

“[sokha] should respect the will of the people,” Ratha said.

Ratha then went on to say that Hun Sen should also resign for failing to protect the lawmakers and the court should investigate the extent of his involvement in organising the protests.
