EU suspends Belarus sanctions

BRUSSELS: -- EU officials said on Thursday that they will will suspend sanctions on Belarus for four months from Saturday.

They include those on President Alexander Lukashenko, who has in the past been described as Europe’s last dictator.

The move follows Lukashenko’s pardoning of political prisoners and a perceived lack of repression surrounding his re-election earlier this month.

Diplomats will review the suspension in February.

Lukashenko, who has been in power for twenty one years, has been keen to rebuild relations with Europe.

The sanctions stopped Belarus from gaining access to European capital markets, leaving Russia as the country’s main source of financing.
