Cabinet demands rehab plans from THAI and others

The Nation

BANGKOK: -- The Cabinet yesterday ordered Thai Airways International, Bangkok Mass Transit Authority and the State Railway of Thailand to submit their business rehabilitation plans within this month.

All the three loss-losing state enterprises are under the supervision of the Transport Ministry.

Transport Minister Arkhom Termpittayapaisith said that the plans would be forwarded to Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha.

"Loss-making state enterprises like THAI need rehabilitation and their employees must realise that their organisational structure does not align with personnel and operations.

The structure remains big with huge expenses on executive-level personnel which bears little responsibility. THAI has reshuffled 77 executive-level titles but the expenses remain high. Does the rehabilitation show any progress?" Arkhom said.

He added that all the state enterprises have been ordered to revamp their operations for long-term viability. This must contain contingency plans.

How about elimination of 90% of these people? I am sure nobody would notice a difference in the output of the executives...

The truth is nothing will change. Musical deckchairs in the case of TG. What Prayut really needs to do if he is serious about turning these state enterprises around is hire foreign consultants/CEO's who are experts in the field and have no regrets about significant restructuring and that includes retrenching large numbers especially in the 'executive'. The Thai mentality will never allow it.

Fully agree. Sadly this government has neither the geopolitical grasp nor the business savvy to do either. There was a time, and it wasn't that long ago, when TG really was the jewel of the region. It's still a better airline than Malaysian (not hard) but one suspects the best thing the Thai government could do would be to hand it to SQ or another airline in the Star Alliance to operate as a subsidiary. It will, of course, never happen.

First of all there are more than 40 Vice Presidents..!!!Have you ever heard of this anywhere in the world???? from a company making a loss...Work that out .. A loss which is guaranteed the a stupid government!! They all get around 70000bt a month plus benefits (car staff , travel and so the list goes on) most of who's "valuable " work contribute between nothing and a little at the very best.. Earlier articles in the Bangkok Post suggest some actually don't have to do anything !!! I am sure when the Prime minister said similar last week he must have meant Thai Airways..The problem is its full of "jobs for the boys", family and friends. Most staff are in a situation where they "can't be sacked" due to connections. Their cut backs have been lower paid staff who actually work . The top heavy executive staff which "burn" money for none or little result are left to fuel the fire. Amazing Thailand.

THAI Airways needs to cut back to the bone!

Start by shedding a lot more of the privileged support staff in executive and management positions. Then, do all you can to try to bring back the loyal customers you have lost through stupid executive initiatives to reduce costs at the expense of service.

Better still, swallow you stupid pride and bring in a foreign CEO with an international track record of success (especially in turnarounds), AND let him have a free hand to save the company while there is still some life.

Junta should lead by example and reduce the bloated military and cancel the unnecessary submarine order and others.

Maybe its time for you to consider moving to the US. With your post you p%#* off at least 1.600 Generals (without RTP) in the US you would only have to deal with 400 enemies.
